Upcoming localendar changes, and how they affect you
After 17 years of running on dedicated hardware, localendar is finally moving to "the cloud".

Every time our infrastructure requires an increase in scale/capacity, we do the math. What does it cost to procure/host our own servers? Can we depend on cloud infrastructure? While many companies have made this move long ago, localendar has some unique architecture and hosting concerns that have made the decision a tough one.

We finally feel the time is right to make this change, and that it will allow us to deliver better performance, scalability, and recoverability going forward.

We will be slowly and carefully making this change over the next 2 months. While this transition is in progress, we are instituting a site-wide "code-freeze" while we migrate localendar architecture to "the cloud"

Because of this migration, we are temporarily not deploying new changes (except in case of emergency patches). Our target for resuming the release of regular fixes/enhancements is late Summer after we have fully moved to the cloud and decommissioned our existing hardware.

While we are striving to make this transition as seamless as possible, you may see brief interruptions in service (usually between 3-5am GMT, and under 30 min, and no more than 1 or 2 per week) if a server you are accessing is being migrated. No existing localendar features should break, but let us know if you see any unusual behavior.

Re: Upcoming localendar changes, and how they affect you
There have been a few unexpected bumps early this morning as the latest round of changes related to the migration trickle across the web

(for our technical audience, the DNS changes for localendar to the new cloud environment are propagating across the web right now)

We are watching the issue closely to make sure there is as little impact as possible; if problems persist we will evaluate temporarily returning to the previous localendar environment.

Re: Upcoming localendar changes, and how they affect you
I believe the worst of this morning's outage is over (I say "the worst" b/c there are always small issues when we make a change to the localendar.com public IP address)

It appears that the problem was related to a database upgrade, but requires further investigation for us to confirm.

There is also currently an issue with email reminders that will require a few minutes of down-time to correct. We will not be making that change until low-usage hours tonight.

localendar /docs are also currently offline; but you can access an old copy here:
http://208.81.127.101/docs

/docs should be back at their regular home (http://localendar.com/docs) tomorrow.

Re: Upcoming localendar changes, and how they affect you
Status update (Jul 1, 2017)
localendar.com is now fully operational on the new cloud environment (yay!)
  • The site's documentation is back where they should be at http://localendar.com/docs
  • Reminders and other emails are being sent correctly
  • Weather forecast data is restored.
We have switched to another provider for weather information, and we believe the forecast data should be even better (we now provide a 7-day forecast instead of a 5-day forecast)
Please note that the new weather icons are temporary; we will most likely be replacing them with different icons in the near future.
