    Kathara Deftera or Clean Monday

    Monday Mar 11
    11:00 - 12:00 EET

Celebrate Clean Monday at the Anoghi community center 10 am onwards

and at the Kioni community center

This first day of Great Lent is called 'Clean Monday' because Christians should begin the holy season with 'clean hearts and good intentions.' It is also because the season of Lent is regarded as a time for when Christians should clean up their spiritual house, coming to terms with their lives and rededicating themselves to a more holy and righteous way of living.

Clean Monday is a day of strict fasting. Christians are not allowed to eat from midnight to noon and can have no meat at all. Christians are also expected to spend extra time praying during the day and reading from the Bible.

Because Clean Monday is also considered to mark the first day of spring, Greeks tend to celebrate it with outdoor activities and picnics rather than fasting and prayer. These activites are often called 'koulouma'.

Traditional foods include olives, octopus, and shrimp. In addition to picnics, outdoor activities used to celebrate the day include flying kites, dancing, music, etc.

    Greek Independence Day

    Monday Mar 25
    (All Day)

This holiday is Greece's National Day and is always celebrated on 25 March.

Greece's Independence Day is actually a holiday that has blended over time with an older festival - the Feast of the Annunciation

    History of Greek Independence Day

In 1821, the Greeks rose up against the Ottoman Empire which had occupied Greece for almost 400 years, leading to the war of independence.

Bishop Germanos of Patras raised the Greek flag at the monastery of Agia Lavras, inciting the Peloponnese to rise against the oppressors.

While the exact date probably may not have been 25 March, it is acknowledged to have occured in late March and it was gradually associated with the religious feast of the Annunciation.

On this day in the Orthodox calendar, the archangel Gabriel appeared to the maiden Mary and informed her that she was pregnant with the divine child.
