Rova Sax Quartet can move you like an Eastern European choir of voices, but with force tearing the walls of the listening space down, simulating the complex sound of a machine, or nature’s wild phenomena, or the overlapping patterns heard with eyes closed in the wilderness.

Rova Sax Quartet's musical goal has been, since 1978, to instigate, challenge, and inspire. The group explores the synthesis of composition and collective improvisation, creating exciting, genre-bending music. Rova:Arts, formed in 1986, acts as umbrella organization for the musicians, facilitating productions and tours, collaborations and special projects.

With a 40th anniversary in 2018, Rova is one of the longest-standing groups in a movement with roots in post-bop, free jazz, avant-rock, and 20th century new music; drawing inspiration from visual art, contemporary poetry and dance. We listen closely and deeply appreciate traditional and pop music styles of Africa and Asia. And then there is the blues; always a key.

Soul Sessions: Lupe Fiasco at August Wilson Center

Wasalu Muhammad Jaco, better known by his stage name Lupe Fiasco, is a Chicago-born, Grammy award-winning American rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, and community advocate. Rising to fame in 2006, following the success of his debut album, Food & Liquor, Lupe has released more than four acclaimed studio albums; his latest being Drogas Wave released fall 2018. His efforts to propagate conscious material helped solidify him as GQ’s Man of the Year in 2006, and garnered recognition as a Henry Crown Fellow. While musical genius and ingenuity are at the forefront of Lupe’s achievements, the artist extends his innovation to projects that aim to foster creative discourse and opportunities in underprivileged and impoverished communities.
