Mother's Day Hike in Smith Woods

    Sunday May 12
    1 pm - 2 pm

    Smith Woods

A hike to highlight the characteristics of an old growth forest, with emphasis on the diversity that it can perpetuate. Come join us for this favorite annual event led by Dr. Marvin Pritts from Cornell University. Learn about tree identification, and see wildflowers that only bloom for a short time in Spring. Find out about the hands-on-management required to maintain a healthy ecosystem on precious aged parcels.

The hike will start at the entrance to Smith Woods near the ShurSave on Route 96 in Trumansburg, NY.

Marvin Pritts is the Director of Undergraduate Studies at Cornell's School of Integrative Plant Science.

Part of our Climate Smart Stewardship series:
May 12 - Mother's Day Hike in Smith Woods
May 19 - Revitalizing a Second Growth Forest
May 26 - Planting Flora for Fauna
June 2 - Paleo to Present: Perspectives on Changes in Plant Life

Learn more about restorative land management practices within a changing world. Discover better land stewardship practices and solutions for potential climate change-related complications.

All workshops held rain or shine (barring really severe weather) Sundays at 1:00 pm. All walks begin at will last at least an hour. They are hikes, so participants should be prepared to be on their feet and out in the weather. In the event of a thunderstorm or worse, events will be canceled.

Flying Start Event - have you ever dreamed of flying?

    Saturday May 18
    9 am - 11 am

East Hill Flying Club - Ithaca Airport
62 Brown Rd, Ithaca, NY 14850, USA

Have you ever thought about learning to fly? Find out more on May 18, 2019, as EAA Chapter 811 hosts a “Flying Start” informational program at the Ithaca Airport.

EAA’s Flying Start program introduces interested individuals to the endless opportunities and fun that result in earning a pilot’s certificate. The event will cover the steps and requirements in learning to fly, provide tips on how to make it economical, and will culminate in a free “Eagle Flight” introductory flight.

The program will be held at 9:00AM on Saturday, May 18th, at East Hill Flying Club, Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport, 62 Brown Rd., Ithaca, New York 14850. Anyone with an interest in aviation is invited to attend.

EAA chapters are the backbone of the international EAA organization, which has more than 200,000 members. EAA has approximately 900 chapters around the world, which provide activities for local aviation enthusiasts with a mission of growing participation in aviation by sharing “The Spirit of Aviation.” EAA Chapter 811, located in Ithaca, is dedicated to growing participation in aviation by sharing the ways people can get started in this fun and fulfilling recreation.

Chapter 811 in Ithaca’s activities range from monthly gatherings, to fly-in breakfasts and barbecues, educational programs, and trips to nearby air museums and airshows. The Chapter also offers free Young Eagles airplane rides for kids between 8 and 17 years of age and Eagle Flights for adults to share our love of flying and build a stronger bond between local aviation and the public. Our members include aviation enthusiasts of all levels of experience from non-pilots and student pilots to professional pilots and instructors. Members own and fly homebuilt aircraft, ultralights and light sport aircraft, vintage airplanes, and factory-built airplanes of all sorts and sizes.

For more information about this Flying Start session, contact Chapter 811 President Mike Brown at 607-844-8584 or by e-mail at wb2jwd@gmail.com.
