TCAT General Manager to unveil an equity initiative at TCAT “Transit Awareness Day” 6/18/19 at TCPL Tuesday Jun 18 4 pm - 6:30 pm Borg-Warner Room East, Tompkins County Public LibraryThe public is invited to celebrate TCAT Transit Awareness Day at an open house from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tues., June 18, at Borg-Warner East Community Room, Tompkins County Public Library, 101 E. Green St., Ithaca. TCAT General Manager Scot Vanderpool is scheduled at around 5 p.m. to reveal a new policy to reduce barriers to riding the bus, particularly for low-income populations. “TCAT’s staff and its board of directors believe that equity is essential to public transit and that everyone deserves reliable transportation to get to work, school, shopping centers, medical services or wherever they need to go,” Vanderpool said. “This is an exciting initiative and Transit Awareness Day is the perfect forum to announce it.” “Transit Awareness Day” is the brainchild of the New York Public Transit Association (NYPTA), a highly successful statewide event held in Albany each year that draws transit stakeholders from all corners of New York State. The most recent event was held in February to promote public transit and to emphasize the transit industry's contributions to the state’s economy. TCAT has a number of projects underway that include - just to name a few - moving toward a greener fleet with the acquisition of electric buses; modernizing its fare collections system; and improving connectivity for rural riders, said Vanderpool, who is a NYPTA board member. “With so much on the drawing board, we decided to have our own localized transit day for staff to chat face to face with our riders, our funders and anyone interested in local transit,” Vanderpool said. In the spirit of NYPTA, the state’s main advocacy organization in Albany, TCAT will discuss how it contributes to the local economy and what it needs to do to ensure that everyone in its service area has access to safe, affordable and reliable transportation, especially low-income populations, Vanderpool said. Additionally, TCAT staff will also be on hand to give updates on TCAT’s “Strategic Plan 2018-2030”, which it released earlier this year to chart a course for improved, integrated and expanded public transportation in Tompkins County over the next several years. The outlines both short-term and long-term goals for the agency to be the key driver in meeting a number of challenges driven by urbanization, technological advances and higher consumer expectations for a solid and reliable network of mobility choices. Vanderpool said he will also take the opportunity at the event to urge community members to join New Yorkers for Better Public Transit, a coalition of people from all over the state calling on lawmakers in Albany for a greater investment in New York’s public transit systems. “We are very grateful that lawmakers addressed funding challenges with increases in the most recent state budget, but we really need that momentum to continue to meet present-day and future demands,” Vanderpool said. Though not necessary, RSVP’s are welcome for TCAT Transit Awareness Day by emailing TCAT staff at tcat@tcatmail.com. Refreshments will be available and attendees can enter a drawing for door prizes.
