Merging Free Calendars with Premium Calendar and keeping the Category Colours!
Having a Premium account and a possible 6 free calendars, (each with the same 4 different categories and colours) the Merge does not appear to transfer the category colours to the Premium calendar. This makes the imported calendars look 'odd' compared with the category colours on the Premium account.
Is there no way you can arrange for the colours to be merged?
Also I presume that if imported calendars had identical categories the tick boxes to show/hide would not work either?
I have tested it with a free calendar and set identical category details and colours but to no avail!!!

Re: Merging Free Calendars with Premium Calendar and keeping the Category Colours!
This isn't an oversight; ever since we allowed people to color events (not including custom categories) we've "pushed" merged calendars to the default color.

You are correct that the tick boxes would not work for merged categories with identical names. Under the covers, even though the names are identical, they are actually different category IDs. That's part of why we can let members have unlimited categories without stepping on each other.

I suppose you noticed you can color-code merged calendars. If we merged in the category colors, which would take precedence?

I'll pass this along to our devs, but I'm not sure there's a way to make it work that would make everyone happy. Happy to pass along any other thoughts/suggestions you might have.

Re: Merging Free Calendars with Premium Calendar and keeping the Category Colours!
Hi Mark,

I have been trying to merge a couple of calendars with the same categories. On the "master" calendar, the tick boxes do work for merged categories with identical names. However, all events have the same format, i.e. the event's default. I have also added the exact same categories on the master calendar. However, the colors on the master do not update (and the ticks still work...).

Would it be possible to apply the master calendar categories formatting to all events from all merged calendars with the exact same category names. Looks like it works for the ticks, maybe it is not so much work to make it work for the event's formatting...

Re: Merging Free Calendars with Premium Calendar and keeping the Category Colours!
Even though the names are the same, the underlying categories all have a unique, system generated ID. That's how we allow multiple members to have the same category names, yet their own custom colors.

Right now, it's not possible to merge in categories and retain the colors and formatting. This is definitely something we can look into as an enhancement however (I will add it to our internal list)

Re: Merging Free Calendars with Premium Calendar and keeping the Category Colours!
Hi Mark,

Thanks to the team for adding the "Filter categories" functionality. This will be very useful for us.
What we have in mind is to create a number of cobranded calendars with common categories. We will need to display each individual calendar on our website as well as each "categorie" calendars and one master calendar including everything.
The cobranding allows us to create each calendar with the same formatting, the "Filter categories" allows us to display the each "category" calendar and the merge calendar allows us to combine them all. The only issue that is preventing us from doing it is the fact that we can't import the category colours in the merged calendars.

Would it be possible for you guys to look into this?

Re: Merging Free Calendars with Premium Calendar and keeping the Category Colours!
We are considering an option or setting to bring in the colors of merged events.
I should mention that in all likelihood, the underlying custom categories of merged events will not be brought over. That means the filtering of merged calendars may not work the way you are hoping.

Re: Merging Free Calendars with Premium Calendar and keeping the Category Colours!
We have been playing quite a bit with merging calendars and categories and we found a way to keep the categories filtering functionality in the “master” calendar, i.e. the calendar where all other calendars are merged.

Please correct us if we are wrong in any of the following as this is only what we think we understood…

We noticed that when creating a category in any calendar, the event is assigned a category number by order of when they have been created. For instance, if the first category created is “car”, all events with this category will have “&category=100” at the end of the event url. The second category you create, say “boat” will have “&category=101” and so on…

Once you merge all calendars, the category assigned to them remains on each event. Therefore, if you create category “car” firstly and category “boat” secondly within your master calendar, the master calendar filtering will work for all merged events as well as the master calendar events.

What you need to be careful about is to create the right categories in the right order. In the example above, if you create the category “boat” first on the master calendar and then “car”, the master calendar will consider all events with category 100 as “boat”, i.e. when clicking on “boat” in the master calendar, you will filter “car” events of the merged calendar.

Hope this helps the other users that have been trying to do the same things than us…

We have not found any way to keep the colours though but Mark advised that localendar is looking into this…
