Disable popup window
How do you disable the popup window?

Description field is blank, but it continues to link to the empty popup window.

That is the intended behaior, because the person viewing the event may still want to export it to their personal calendar, and that feature is on the pop-up.

There are other calendar views that don't have the event pop-up such as the list-style views. And you can also hide the links under Options->General
