sad   Removing default categories
I've been searching the forums and the only reason I've found that we're unable to edit or remove the default categories is, because they are used for the search feature.

What I don't understand is, if we are not using "any" of the default categories, why can we not turn them off from our view in the category selection drop down when creating new events? Truly there must be some way to do this. I've created 8 categories or so, and I don't want to have to find them between all the default ones in the list. That's extra time spent having to read through them to find the right ones. That's just not an acceptable situation, there has to be some way we can turn them off. Even if it's only for our viewing in the list, I don't care if they are still active, makes no difference since our calendar wont' have any search features for those categories anyways, but having to filter through them all to create each event is counter productive.

Re: Removing default categories
Since you asked so nicely tongue
The option to remove the default categories on the Event Editor is now available (there is a checkbox for this on the Custom Categories page)

If you hide the default categories *and* you don't have any custom categories, we will still show at least the "General" category though.

Marc:

A great addition. Thanks to fpcbm for suggesting it.

Re: Removing default categories
Appreciate the addition of the removal (ok that sounded wrong haha) of the default categories from the list when creating new categories, very helpful, but ...

The setting doesn't stay put. Every so often I have to go back into the categories and turn it back off again.

This "may" be from having multiple pages of the calendar setup open at the same time so what I usually have open are the following pages in case that helps to know:
Add Event
Full calendar as seen by Admin
Full calendar as seen by Public

I do open the settings sometimes in another page which might also be the issue, but ... truly once you set this it should not lose that setting I would think?

Re: Removing default categories
normally, I would agree with you about the settings staying put.
However, if you have multiple windows open in the same browser, and you are trying to impersonate different "roles" (i.e., user and admin), then localendar may get confused. That's because behind the scenes, we only keep 1 session for you, and you are essentially asking it to be different people at the same time.

What I typically do is keep 1 browser (ie Chrome) open for my "user view" when I am testing, and another browser (ie Firefox) open for my admin view.

Many sites (including Google) have this same limitation. I found a few attempts online to address is via browser plugins including this one:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/sessionbox-free-multi-log/megbklhjamjbcafknkgmokldgolkdfig

(note that I haven't personally tested any of them, but they seem to address the need for creating separate sessions in the same browser)

Re: Removing default categories
Marc:

I am having similar problems as fpcbm. The setting doesn't stay put.

Here is what happens to me.
I log on, go to the Custom Categories page, and check to hide the default categories on the Event Editor. When I then click 'Save' I get a Validation Error, which says 'A Category Name is required'. But I am not adding a new Category. I click OK to the Validation Error, the check mark is in place, and everything works fine until I log off. When I log back on, the check mark has been removed.

Re: Removing default categories
Just to start w/ a little clarification, your issue is not related to fcpbm except that it involves categories smile

When you click any of the 3 check boxes at the bottom of the Custom Category page, an update is automatically send to localendar via ajax in the background. You don't have to click Save. The Save button only pertains to the form above it (for adding a new custom category).

So, the error you are seeing is normal, because you thought you were clicking save for the checkboxes, but in reality you are clicking it for the empty form above cool

Now let's get to your actual problem though... You click the checkbox to hide default categories... it's (theoretically) saved in the background, you come back after signing out/in and it's not checked.

That's a bug! It's fixed! Huzzah!

Is that just to keep us alert, because no other page automagically saves anything, at least that I have found?

Works great. Thanks for the prompt fix.
