You are correct - manually parsing the iCal file is a huge pain.
However, let me ask you a simple question (and it's related to your "if I delete the valid event, the "ghost event" is also removed)

If you open https://calendar.google.com/calendar/ical/0d9ifhssge8v11noc3udsnlj2c%40group.calendar.google.com/public/basic.ics?noCache
in a text editor and search for "SUMMARY:Inline Practice"

Do you find an event with only that title?

Because here is my fundamental question: When you talk about an event and a "ghost event", are you saying they have the exact same title? Or does 1 event say "Inline Practice" and another "Inline Practice - SI-2"? Because if that's the case (each event has a different title) and there are two entries like this in the .ics file:

SUMMARY:Inline Practice
SUMMARY:Inline Practice - SI-2

then it means there are 2 events shown b/c there are 2 events in the file.

From my side, that's what I see (2 events on the calendar, 2 events in the file). Also, you mention deleting the event and both entries going away. I assume you mean "deleting on Google" since localendar doesn't let you delete merged iCal events.

I'm also not sure how this is a workaround - don't you want to keep the event on Google at least once? Or are you saying after you delete it (and 2 entries go away), you re-add it and there is only 1 entry?

ha! I can assure you that President-elect Trump is not responsible for any ical-related parsing issues.

So, I merged my Google Calendar last week and everything was fine. I added some more stuff today and edited some old stuff, and it shows everything it is supposed to. But it also shows the previous version of the events I edited, as well as the edited version. How do I get the version of the event prior to editing to go away?

The only solution I have found is to delete all the events on days where you have 'ghost' events. In my case, when I deleted the valid events, the 'ghost' events disappeared by themselves.

I'm not sure where (and how) you want to merge from, but full examples are in our docs:
