I am somewhat new to calendar syncing. We have posted our calendar from our website and it is working pretty well. However, when you use the "ical" sync icon it only dumps the data from the calendar to my ical, and does not really sync or subscribe to our calendar. If you look at the subscriptions on my ical it does not list our troop calendar as one of them. In addition if I try to cut and paste the url of the calendar to my ical to subscribe I get and error that the data is not valid.

So my question is there really a subscription or just a data dump of information to other calendars. So far I have not seen any updates to my own ical from the troop calendar unless i hit the ical button again at the bottom. This does not look like it is doing any real time feeds?

My calendar is: http://www.localendar.com/public/Troop-50

Hi Troop-50

I can't quite follow when you talk about "calendar" if you are talking about localendar or a local calendar on a device or other site (say Google), so I will give a more generic explanation that will hopefully help.

If you want to sync events from a Google calendar into your localendar calendar, then you can add your Google ics feed to localendar. Changes to Google will automatically appear on your localendar calendar (well, it takes Google a bit to update their feed, but it does happen)

If you wanted yo show your localendar events on an external calendar (again, say Google) then you would take the url from the iCal link at the bottom of localendar, and import it into your Google calendar. When you make changes to your localendar calendar, the changes will automatically appear on your Google calendar.

So that's syncing: You have the ability to either add other calendars to localendar, or localendar to other calendars, and have any changes shown automatically without any further action required on your part.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

Marc:

What we want to do is the second item:

If you wanted yo show your localendar events on an external calendar (again, say Google) then you would take the url from the iCal link at the bottom of localendar, and import it into your Google calendar. When you make changes to your localendar calendar, the changes will automatically appear on your Google calendar.

However here is what we have found: If we hit the ical button at the bottom of the calendar it does not sync our calendar with someones Google or calendar but dumps only the scheduled items from the Troop's calendar to their calendar, ie. no updating occurs from the Troop 50 calendar to the personal calendars. The button does not really give you a URL but creates a process to move scheduled items over.

Also, I have tried to copy and paste the URL link for the calendar at the URL line at the top of the webpage when i try to paste it into my ical program i get an error message that the link is not valid?

The url you want to paste into your iCal program is either the link on the ical button, or you can just use this:
http://www.localendar.com/public/Troop-50.ics

If someone with a Google calendar wants to subscribe to live updates from the Troop-50 calendar, they should take that URL and subscribe to it from their Google calendar using these instructions:

https://support.google.com/calendar/answer/37100?hl=en

Is that what you are after?

Marc this is indeed what I was looking for, thanks. Why is there not just a subscribe button on the calendar, that would make it easier. I did not know how to do the link until you listed it.

The iCal button on the calendar has a slightly different link, but it returns exactly the same data. We could re-label it "Subscribe", but then what would we call the RSS button? So we label each by what it technically is.
