I'm happy to announce delegating Admin rights to other users is now available.

This frequently-requested feature is available by clicking Sharing on the premium menu tab.

You can given other localendar members the ability to add and edit events on your calendar, as well as merge calendars, import/export, etc.

Delegated admins cannot add other admins, nor can they change any of your settings under Options (colors, password, etc)

http://www.localendar.com/docs/display/lc/Adding+Other+Users+as+Calendar+Administrators

Please note that this feature requires at least a Premium Webmaster subscription on the part of the calendar owner (the designated admins do not need a premium subscription)

Marc:

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

You say:
"This panel allows you to permission other members to add and edit events on your calendar.
They will have an option to switch to your calendar on their left-menu when they sign into localendar."

My premium calendar is set up to 'Restrict calendar viewing to specific members'. So I took one of those members and added them under the Admin Permissions section.

When that person (actually me with a different localendar membership) opens the calendar, he gets the normal User Logon screen. Then he is taken to the calendar with an 'Add Event' button. But there is no place I can find that he can Edit someone else's events. What have I missed?

Have a look at the images here:
http://www.localendar.com/docs/display/lc/Adding+Other+Users+as+Calendar+Administrators

What you did is correct (adding that user to the admin section)

Now, underneath their left menu when they've signed in, they should see two calendars (theirs + yours) with radio buttons next to each. And they should be able to use that to easily switch between which calendar they are using.

Marc:

Thanks for the link. I was going to the wrong place. Because this calendar (http://www.localendar.com/public/OJPpatrol) is restricted to specific members, and once they go to the above site, and log in, the calendar they see now has the button 'Add Event', I assumed that the button 'Edit Event' would also be added there. But instead, they are supposed to go to http://www.localendar.com and log in, so they have access to the normal Localendar layout.

Maybe my situation is somewhat unique. I signed up all these specific members so they could access the calendar because the Police do not want it accessible to the general public. But they have never used Localendar before, and I am trying to keep it as simple as possible for them. With the way you have it configured, those added to 'Admin Permissions' can access lots of the Premium options, as well as Import and Publish from the Standard options--thing I do not want these folks to be able to do.

So would it be possible to add an 'Edit Event' button next to the 'Add Event' button for those given 'Admin Permissions' on the calendar at http://www.localendar.com/public/OJPpatrol ? That way, my other users would never even see the left hand column of the main Localendar screen which includes the Standard and Premium options?

As it currently sits, the people you add as "delegated admins" are essentially that: administrators.

To edit an event, they would do the same as you: Just click on it on the calendar.

Yes, they have almost all the same rights (except some stuff under Options). I hear you that this might be too much power for some calendar owners to delegate.

BTW, if they click Publish, the most they are able to do is generate some HTML site to include the calendar. I suspect none of them will actually do anything with this.

We're open to taking some more rights away (Publish maybe...) but for some users having other people upload and export other calendars is definitely a need.

I appreciate your position, and because I am in the small minority, I would not suggest that you modify the rights that so many folks use.

I was thinking that on the 'Allow Visitors to Add Calendar Events' options on the Options General Page, there would be another option that Visitors may add AND EDIT Public Events. If selected, then an "Edit' button would be placed next to the current 'Add' button. That 'Edit button would just take one to the 'Edit Event' page as a stand alone page, just like the 'Add Event' is a stand alone page.

Of course I have no idea if that is an easy or complex coding issue, so if not easy to do, say so, and I will stop pursuing it.

I'm not opposed to talking about how this could work, but I can't make any promises wink

If we put an Edit Event button next to Add Event, how would localendar know which event you want to edit when you clicked on it?

Of course, clicking on an event on the public view is the logical way to see the event details.. Would you want to see a small "edit" icon on the event somehow that opened it for editing?

I think we could implement this as an option - you know it could potentially lead to unwanted outcomes if people accidentally/maliciously changed events on your calendar though. How would you feel about that? Would you password-protect your calendar?

You are always thinking about all the negative consequences, which is good. I tend to be too narrow, so your questions make me think more about what would really be beneficial.

>>Of course, clicking on an event on the public view is the logical way to see the event details.. Would you want to see a small "edit" icon on the event somehow that opened it for editing?<<

That is a great idea, and I like it. {Although I would like the screen that opens to include both 'Edit' and 'Save As'.}

One solution is to incorporate this feature in the "Sharing' option, and restrict it. That way only members who are on that list can access the calendar in the first place. So my thought is to have not only 'View' permission, but also 'Edit' permission as an option for each member added. Then the Calendar Owner could decide who has the "Edit' permission. I think that would minimize any malicious modifications.

For some that might be too restrictive, if they want a truly public calendar. So perhaps a better solution, is to also add a variation of the above. If one selected the 'Allow anyone to view my public events...' option, there would be an option to give Members 'Edit only' permission. Then only those Members would see the small edit icon, and anyone could still view the calendar without having to be a member.

For this general feature to be easy to use and not too confusing, I think it should NOT require the member to go to their 'My Calendar' screen, like the 'Admin Permissions' does.

So now it is your turn for more thoughts biggrin

I was thinking that you could "Allow public to edit events" which would be super-risky, unless you had password-protected the public calendar.

Then, when a user is looking at an event pop-up, down by the close button (and the export to iCal, Google, etc) there would be a button for Edit.

The "Edit rights" option is a little more secure, but I am not sure how complicated that would be to add.

As I said, in my specific case with my OJPpatrol calendar [which the Police see] that would be fine, because the only folks that can access the calendar have a password, which I control.

However I would like the screen that opens once the button is pushed to include both 'Edit' and 'Save As'. That would make it much easier for my users to set up events, since I have created template entries for folks to type in a few words, check some boxes, set the correct date/time, and click 'Save As'.
