Is there any way someone who views the calendar with an iCalendar link can filter for certain categories of events?

Yes
Go to the publish wizard and select "A link to a full page view of my calendar" in Step 1

In Step 2, choose "ical Export" from the drop down

Also in step two, select the categories you want to be included in the iCal feed and click "Set categories"

Step 3 will contain a link to an iCal feed that will only include the categories that you selected

Thank you. When I follow those instructions, localendar will generate a link that I can use in a webpage, but is there any way to filter a feed into a smart phone's "other subscribed calendar" feed?

This is the link localendar generates with the iCal export function
<a href="//localendar.com/public/FASD_Music?categories=100&style=X2">calendar link</a>

As I can tell we can only enter a *server name* when our parents subscribe on their phones: localendar.com/public/FASD_Music.ics

Is there a way to convert the link generated from the iCal export into something our parents can enter into their phones in place of "localendar.com/public/FASD_Music.ics" that will filter for just the events the parent is interested in?

what smartphone/app are you using?
The full link should be supported on most platforms (the parameters should not normally be stripped off/unsupported)
