We received this note from our data center provider today:

The purposes of this email is to inform you of a very important issue regarding your serverss. On the evening of April 1st we were informed by our data center that they will be closing their doors; this is our data center provider, not our bandwidth provider (Electric Lightwave).

Unfortunately, we had no advance notice and therefore, it was impossible to anticipate that this would happen so quickly. Therefore, due to this sudden set of circumstances we are moving all servers to another one of our
data centers in Seattle, Washington until further notice.

The data center in Seattle, Washington is inside the Westin building which is well known as the premier data center in the Northwest part of the United States.

There will be a short window of downtime of approximately 3 to 3.5 hrs the evening of Thursday, April 7th. In the meantime, we would like to provide you with new IP addresses and assist you with any nameserver IP address changes or any other needs and requirements you may have.

Please be assured that if we had received ANY advance notice of this company's closure, we would have informed you immediately. We believe one of the benefits the Seattle data center is that we will have multiple bandwidth providers to all of serve our racks. Bandwidth overage prices will also drop significantly. Finally, the Westin building is used by many high profile clients, thereby reducing the likelihood of a sudden closure.

Please know that we will do everything to make this transition seamless and pain free for you and your servers.

This is an unexpected and unfortunate announcement, but at this time, we feel the least disruptive option is to participate with this move. 2 days is too short a period to make alternate arrangements. We are currently checking to see if the "evening" referred to is Eastern Standard Time or PST. During this period, members should anticipate that their calendars will not be accessible.

We will provide further updates as we discuss this matter with our provider.

Update: 15:30, 4/5/05 ** The outage will occur between 11:00PM PST and 2:00AM PST

Whew! Our host finally got things up and running. There will definitely be a (hopefully calm) post mortem to discover why this move took about 8 hours more than we were told.

Unfortunately, we didn't have many options give how the short notice our host received from their bandwidth provider.

On our side, we have a cluster of servers with this host, and will likely begin building a back-up site with another provider to avoid these situations in the future. The challenge there is to make sure user data is replicated as quickly as possible across these environments.
