I would like my calendar to open to the current date. There is probably an easy way to do this, but I'm not smart enough to see it. Can you help me?

The default Day View behaviour is to always go to the current date:
http://www.localendar.com/public/EverettHenderson?style=D0
or in list format:
http://www.localendar.com/public/EverettHenderson?style=D0

or "Today + Happening Soon"
http://www.localendar.com/public/EverettHenderson?style=D2

You can force a specific date (past or future) to display, by passing in the start_date parameter:
http://www.localendar.com/public/EverettHenderson?style=D0&start_date=5/1/2012
