Two of the planes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York City. Within a few hours, both of the twin towers collapsed into rubble, demolishing a large section of lower Manhattan. A third plane hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. The passengers and crew of the fourth plane fought back, and the plane was downed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

     Almost 3,000 people were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, including the 19 al Qaeda terrorists. The shocking events of September 11 were televised globally and left much of the world reeling in horror. The administration of President George W. Bush responded by declaring a “war on terrorism,” including the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the invasion of Afghanistan.

Skinner and Key were there to negotiate the release of prisoners, one of whom was Dr. William Beanes, a resident of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, who had been arrested after jailing marauding British troops who were looting local farms. Skinner, Key, and Beanes were not allowed to return to their own sloop because they had become familiar with the strength and position of the British units and with the British intent to attack Baltimore. Thus, Key was unable to do anything but watch the bombarding of the American forces at Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore on the night of September 13–14, 1814.

At dawn, Key was able to see an American flag still waving. Back in Baltimore and inspired, Key wrote a poem about his experience, 'Defence of Fort M'Henry', which was soon published in William Pechin's American and Commercial Daily Advertiser on September 21, 1814. He took it to Thomas Carr, a music publisher, who adapted it to the rhythms of composer John Stafford Smith's 'To Anacreon in Heaven', a popular tune Key had already used as a setting for his 1805 song 'When the Warrior Returns', celebrating U.S. heroes of the First Barbary War. (Key used the 'star-spangled' flag imagery in the earlier song.) It has become better known as 'The Star-Spangled Banner'. Though somewhat difficult to sing, it became increasingly popular, competing with 'Hail, Columbia' (1796) as the de facto national anthem by the Mexican–American War and American Civil War. More than a century after its first publication, the song was adopted as the American national anthem, first by an Executive Order from President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 (which had little effect beyond requiring military bands to play what became known as the 'Service Version') and then by a Congressional resolution in 1931, signed by President Herbert Hoover.

No symbol better commemorates the sacrifice POW/MIA veterans have made for the country than the famous POW/MIA flag.

The POW/MIA flag was designed during the Vietnam War as a symbol of national concern about U.S. military personnel taken as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, according to the National League of POW/MIA families.  In 1970, Michael Hoff, the wife of a soldier listed as missing in action in the Vietnam War and a member of the National League of POW/MIA Families wanted to create a symbol to honor her husband and other POW/MIA veterans. Hoff reached out to Norman Rivkees, the vice president of Annin & Company, which had recently made a banner for the the People’s Republic of China to commemorate their entry into the United Nations. Rivkees was sympathetic to Hoff's cause and arranged for her to design the flag with Newt Heisley, one of Annin's advertising agency's employees.

The National League of POW/MIA Families' Board of Directors held a meeting in January  1972 to approve the POW/MIA flag and began manufacturing the banner for distribution shortly after. Since the league wanted the flag to receive as much exposure as possible it did not seek a trademark or copyright for the image, allowing anyone to reproduce the image and spread awareness about the families of POW/MIA veterans.

That was much needed during the Vietnam War, where the U.S. lists 1,350 Americans as having been prisoners of war, including Arizona Sen. John McCain, or designated missing in action. In the United States' conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan since 1991, 12 soldiers have been designated as prisoners of war, including Sgt. Bowe R. Bergdahl, while just one, Navy pilot Lt. Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher, was declared MIA. Speicher's remains were later found at his plane's crash site after a tip from an Iraqi civilian.

It was the largest airborne operation up to that time. Field Marshal Montgomery's goal was to force an entry into Germany over the Lower Rhine. He wanted to circumvent the northern end of the Siegfried Line and this required the operation to seize the bridges across the Maas and two arms of the Rhine as well as several smaller canals and tributaries. Crossing the Lower Rhine would allow the Allies to encircle Germany's industrial heartland in the Ruhr from the north. It made large-scale use of airborne forces, whose tactical objectives were to secure the bridges and allow a rapid advance by armored units into Northern Germany. Several bridges between Eindhoven and Nijmegen were captured at the beginning of the operation but Gen. Horrocks' XXX Corps ground force advance was delayed by the demolition of a bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal, an extremely overstretched supply line at Son, and failure to capture the main road bridge over the river Waal before 20 September.

    Dinner will be catered by The Lanesboro Pastry Shoppe. The menu will be pork tenderloin, garlic mashed potatoes, vegetable, rolls and raspberry chocolate cake.

      A trip to the Preston Veterans Home to spend time playing games, putting puzzles together, and visiting with our Veterans. Meet at the Legion at 1:15 pm and we will car pool.
