Ellen DeMaria has been painting for more than 25 years\, and more intens ively for the last five. She paints expressively in watercolor and acrylic \, creatively layering colors\, shapes\, textures\, and forms. For this sh ow – her first solo – DeMaria has produced works in the realm of abstract realism. “There are some paintings that show more detail than others\,” sh e says. “It's a feeling that I want you to experience when you see it.” Fo r her subject matter\, DeMaria is drawn to landscapes\, particularly water scenes. “You'll also see still lifes\, highly textured abstracts\, and na tural elements of nature\,” she said. “I love the rustic feel of old boats and harbors. The piles of crab pots and ropes and chains offer interestin g textures to play around and I'm always searching for ways to paint figur es involved in the scene\, working or playing. I work to present my own u nique viewpoint on my subject matter. It is the essence of the scene that I'm trying to show the viewer\, hence the name of the show.” Ellen DeMari a’s paintings have been juried and awarded prizes in the region. In 2017\, she was juried into the Virginia Artists Show at Charles Taylor Arts Cent er in Hampton. &ldquo\;You'll also see still lifes\, highly textured abstracts\, and natural elements of nature\, &rdquo\; she said. &ldquo\;I love the rustic feel of old boats and harbors . \;The piles of crab pots and ropes and chains offer interesting text ures to play around and I'm always searching for ways to paint figures inv olved in the scene\, working or playing. \; I work to present my own u nique viewpoint on my subject matter. \; It is the essence of the scen e that I'm trying to show the viewer\, hence the name of the show.&rdquo\;
Ellen DeMaria&rsquo\;s paintings have been juried and awarded pri zes in the region. In 2017\, she was juried into the Virginia Artists Show at Charles Taylor Arts Center in Hampton. The same year\, two of her pain tings were selected as part of Hampton Halls of Art XIX and XX\, Hampton C onvention Center&rsquo\;s permanent exhibit. She has also juried in Art at the River in Yorktown\, and the Port Warwick Art and Sculpture Festival i n Newport News.

The students receive a large packet with colors worksheets\, and multiple pat terns of swags and borders with grouping of two sizes of roses. Also writ ten step by step instructions. Suggested Colors for the surface prep: a s oft green or French Blue. This is the method I used to paint furniture fo r 4 galleries when I had a furniture shop. The rose is my method of rose painting is by putting pressure on the brush to form the petals. I will b e teaching how to freehand these ten petals rose using patterns as aids. T he class will be held at the Marlbank Farm Clubhouse which is nestled in t he woods with plenty of room to paint larger pieces and a full kitchen. The show was rescheduled from April because of COVID-19. James Warwick Jo nes is well known in Hampton Roads for his realist paintings and as a teac her and manager of Charles Taylor Visual Arts Center in Hampton\, from whi ch he retired in 2018. Simply titled “Paintings\,” Jones’ show collection includes a range of his realist paintings in sizes from miniature to large \, acrylic and watercolor media\, and a range of subjects including landsc ape\, interiors\, architecture\, travel\, still life and portraits. His paintings are interpretations and inspirations of the world he sees around him. He says\, of his subject matter\, “I try to be aware of\, constant ly observing and sensitive to things I see that interest and move me in so me way. Sometimes this occurs in my everyday life -- taking a walk\, drivi ng in my car\, and seeing someone I know or a stranger. Other times\, I go out with a photo shoot in mind\, perhaps after a snowfall or a foggy morn ing\, or to a favorite or new place.” He adds\, “Things that attract me to paint might be beautiful\, or something most people would consider unap pealing or even ugly. They might be transformed by light and shadow\, show the effects of time and wear.” “Paintings” is Jones’ first solo show at a gallery in a decade. “After the COVID-19 delay\, we are glad that we are able to present this show. We are honored and excited to have James Wa rwick Jones and his work at On The Hill Gallery\,” says Yorktown Arts Foun dation President Lisa Trichel-Beavers. “Jim’s paintings are dramatic\; eac h eliciting emotion and their own story. “Garden Perspectives” Art Show RRULE:FREQ=DAILY;COUNT=26 DESCRIPTION:Without the usual fanfare\, but with plenty of community partic ipation\, On the Hill Gallery has opened its “Garden Perspectives” show wi th the help of sponsor Ken Matthews Landscaping. “This show wouldn’t have been possible without them and they were the perfect sponsor for a theme l ike this\,” said Lisa Trichel-Beavers\, president of the gallery board. Yo rktown Arts Foundation board members decided to go forward with the art sh ow despite the fact that the usual reception and awards ceremony would not be possible\, due to COVID restrictions and precautions. Instead\, the te am of volunteers decided to create an outreach to the broader community by inviting non-member artists to participate in the show. The response was overwhelmingly positive\, with 34 different artists\, from multiple discip lines\, submitting work. Funds raised from the show contribute to further community outreach\, providing art education to community youth. “Last yea r was a season when so many people felt trapped in some way. This show’s f ocus is designed to combat that. Each piece is a meditation on the beauty surrounding us\,” explained Trichel-Beavers. Works in the show were judged by fine artist\, June Skalak\, who has more than 20 years of fine art pai nting\, as well as art education and graphic design to her credit. Awards were generously provided by Ken Matthews Landscaping. All work in the show \, including winning pieces\, is for sale.
