Oppressive debt h as played a role in major social revolutions that have resulted in the cle aring of debt records\, yet there are other debts\, like the cost of being born\, for which many could not imagine demanding repayment. In the past ten years\, US national debt and personal debt have reached all-time highs &mdash\;levels at which full repayment may seem implausible. How does debt shape the way we relate to one another? How do we decide which debts we w ill repay\, and which we will not?

Clemens Starck was born in 1937. A Princeton dropout and former merchant seaman\, he has supported his literary and intellectual interests for more than fifty years by work ing with his hands\, mainly as a carpenter and construction foreman. He is the author of six books of poetry and has performed his poems widely thro ughout the West. A widower\, he has three grown children and lives on fort y-some acres in the foothills of the Coast Range in western Oregon.
