Some have used the time to experiment with creating proprietary soles by learning about and experimenting with various synthetics, urethane, and rubbers while others have used the program to gain additional skills/knowledge about patternmaking and putting their patterns to the test, and or to learn about or try out new processes, whilst others use it to work out design problems with prototype concepts for their capsule lines and bring specific materials and/or hardware etc to incorporate into specific concepts with the aim of developing a prototype into a finished showroom quality sample.

Instructors and or staff may assist but to not assemble or construct student work. As with most all other programs at The Shoe College, we teach the importance of learning through students’ experience directly with everything having to do with their footwear, from materials choices to fabrication to finishing. Our emphasis is not on the spec sheet or the CAD images of the footwear idea. Our emphasis is on bringing that concept to life. This is where concepts are tested, tried, and experimented with for improvements in efficiency, wearability, and feasibility.

Students can learn welting, wooden pegging, building and installing veg tan counters, choice of wonderflex, fiberglass, or veg-tan toe boxes, insoles, midsoles and rubber or leather outsoles. Choose from the selection of leathers on hand at the studio or bring your own leathers or vegan materials to try.
