This federal grant program supports economic development projects located on or near mine sites that ceased operations before the Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) was signed into law. 

The 2026 grant application, application tips and guidelines, and other helpful resources are available on the WVDEP's OAMLR webpage.

Completed applications are due Friday, July 10, 2026.

Workman Wildlife Education Center for a workshop on tree identification! We will start indoors with a brief presentation on the many non-leaf clues you can use to identify a tree while checking out some specimens. You will be introduced to various guides that can be of use to you both in the field and in your further study. We will take a walk after the lecture and put our newfound skills to use, so please dress for the weather and prepare for light hiking.

Participants will go home with tree ID guides and the confidence to begin an empowering lifelong journey of learning about native tree species!This workshop is free and open to the public, but registration is required so we have adequate supplies. We hope to see you there!
