Chiltern Hills walk: Little Kimble to Princes Risborough

(Sun, 05 Apr 2026 )

On 5 April, EASTER Sunday, I will lead a nice Chiltern Hills country walk from Little Kimble to Princes Risborough.

The Chilterns is a really nice area to walk with lots of beech woodland and occasional views.
The route includes the Coombe hill and Chequers mount.
This walk is about 11 miles long and hilly !
It's a training walk for the Lake District.
The total ascent according to OS Maps is 1,500 feet, about half a Lake District mountain.
It won't be suitable for the slower walkers or those that don't like hills.
People that cope fine at the usual pace of the longer day walks.

TRAVEL: Catch the 09:53 Train from MARYLEBONE to LITTLE KIMBLE (11:06)

START: Little Kimble station at 11:06

LUNCH: Please bring a Packed Lunch.
    The plan is to have an early drink stop at the Russel Arms Butlers Cross, but not for food.

DISTANCE: About 10.5 to 11 miles.

FINISH : Early evening at Princes Risborough station. Fast trains to London at 17:22, 18:22.

The walk will be at my usual pace of about 2+ mph, so ideal for people who regularly take part in walks of 10+ miles.
It will not be suitable for Olympic sprinters or very slow walkers.
I will stop to read the map from time to time, as I have not lead this route for a long time.
Your patience and good humour will be appreciated.

Did I mention it's hilly ?? Beware acclivities.

If the weather is really rough on Sunday and much better on Easter Monday, I may postpone the walk until Easter Monday 6th April.
I will confirm the arrangements a day or two before the walk.

Hope to see a few keen walkers there :-)
Happy walking,
Ralph

.lc_mobile_usr * {font-size:14px;}

Easter Monday walk: Sunningdale to Windsor, 11 miles

(Mon, 06 Apr 2026 )

This walk might appeal to those looking for a respite from CLOG's more
arduous walks on Saturday and Sunday. It goes through Virginia Water (a
lake), Valley Gardens (which overlooks it), Windsor Great Park (a forest
and deer park), and the Long Walk to Windsor Castle, all highly
manicured, classic landscapes. I thought this walk would have a
'holiday' feeling.

We will have a lunch stop after around 5 miles at Saville Gardens
cafeteria , run by Benugo who run lots of park cafeterias , or you can
have your own 'field rations'.

There are plenty of cafe and tea shop options in Windsor and there is
the Wetherspoons option for people like me.

The ticketing situation is a bit complicated in that there are 2
stations at Windsor so I'll leave that to you. There's Windsor Central
from where you can get back to Paddington ,changing at Slough, and
there's Windsor and Eton Riverside which goes to Waterloo and takes
longer. Both services are half hourly.

We will take the 10.06 from Waterloo which arrives at Sunningdale at
11.21. This train also calls at Vauxhall at 10.09 and Clapham junction
at 10.15 and Wimbledon at 10.22.

Regards

Dan

.lc_mobile_usr * {font-size:14px;}

Evening walk: Wartime London - Epicentre

(Wed, 15 Apr 2026 )

This first walk in my ‘Don’t Mention the Walk’ World War Two series covers the area around Whitehall, at the heart of the government and allied control centres where the allied and British efforts were managed. Besides walking past the sites of many of these centres, we will also pass some war memorials about different contributors to the victory. We also pass sites of wartime destruction, and clubs which military people used for distraction from the conflict. So plenty to see.

The walk will be 3-4 miles. Meet at Piccadilly Circus (inappropriately by the statue of Eros) at 6.30pm on Wednesday 15 April.

We will finish in a pub.

Dave

.lc_mobile_usr * {font-size:14px;}

Pinner Wheelbarrow Race walk

(Sun, 19 Apr 2026 )

As in previous years we are celebrating St George's day by organising a walk to watch the Pinner Wheelbarrow Race. This will be a gentle 4-mile walk from Ruislip to Pinner to join in the celebrations by following the River Pinn along the Celandine route. As per last year, the plan is to stop just over half way at the Eastcote House Walled garden cafe or drop into the nearby pub 'The Case is Altered' for a drink.

The route finishes at Pinner in the High street where the St George's day celebrations will be underway including music & Morris dancing. Pinner metropolitan line tube station is very close to the High Street. The aim is to be in Pinner for the start of the Wheelbarrow race at 3pm.

Meet at Ruislip Station Metropolitan line (and sometimes Piccadilly Line) 11:00 Sunday 19th April.

Both stations are within the Oyster zone.

Please note there are planned engineering works affecting the Piccadilly line on the 19th and there is no service between Hyde Park Corner and Acton Town.

Melissa

.lc_mobile_usr * {font-size:14px;}

Visit to National Trust Rainham Hall. Walk along the Ingrebourne river to Hornchurch Country park and then to Upminster via the the Upminster windmill. Friday 24th April. Catch the 10.24 train to Grays arriving 10.47 at Rainham via West Ham (10.33) and Barking (10.39). Bring a sandwich to eat in the Country park.

We plan to visit the compact but pretty Queen Anne house built jin 1729 The house is open on Friday 24th April and is situated, not by design, very close to Rainham station. National Trust members get in free but tickets are only £6.50 for adults. The attached garden is free to walk around and there is a cafe serving coffee and cake. There are toilets there. Also a pub opposite if bored with the history - the Phoenix. Other pubs are in the village

we shall walk through dthe Hornchurch Country park along the river Ingrebourne to look at the Upminster Windmill which is closed but we can walk around it.We follow the route taken by Bev earlier in March. After the windmill we can walk down to Upminster Bridge tube (District line) station via the Windmill pub or go to Upminster station with faster trains back home

The journeys are in Oyster zone 6 and are covered by the Freedom pass and over 60s cards. Bring sandwiches or buy a snack at the Essex wildlife centre on the way. Distance about 6.5 miles. Some road walking Largely flat but maybe some mud

Leader is EB Email -buff4463@gmail.com NT tickets can be bought online or at the house

.lc_mobile_usr * {font-size:14px;}

A walk in Bedfordshire

(Sat, 25 Apr 2026 )

Do come for this walk on Saturday 25th April. Nearly 12 miles. I have not planned any drop-out points.

We did this one a few years ago.

Highlights include the chalk quarry, the Tree Cathedral, the perimeter of Whipsnade Zoo, and Dunstable Downs. The start and the finish go through Dunstable.

Lunch will be in Kensworth. There are benches in the Methodist Church garden, and there is the Farmer's Boy pub, where I have booked a table for 12:45.

Travel: Thameslink train; depart Farringdon 09:57, London St Pancras International 10:06, St Albans City 10:25; arr Luton 10:41. (I might join at St Albans City).

Meet outside Luton station on the bus station side (not the High Town side). We will then take the bus to Dunstable. It takes about 15 minutes on the Busway.

Return to London the same route in reverse.

Look forward to seeing you!

.lc_mobile_usr * {font-size:14px;}
