This class will begin with Graham Based Modern Dance which will focus on the Graham technique involving the motor base of the pelvis as a starting point for most movement developments. Class structure will involve floorwork, stretches, center standing technique, going across the floor and somatics.

The class will end with an exploration of this technique form choreographically, through movement research.

We welcome dancers of all ages.  Children should be old enough to learn the dance and keep dancing for several minutes until that dance is over.

Most of the evening is contra dances, but we have an occasional change of pace with a circle, square, or mixer, and we typically enjoy a waltz before the mid-evening break and at the end of the evening.

We recommend that you bring a water bottle to stay hydrated.  During the break we have time for socializing and potluck snacks.  Feel free to bring something to share if you’d like.

Our dances are free of smoke, drugs, alcohol, and FRAGRANCES.  Please refrain from wearing perfumes or other scented products like deodorants or hair spray.

The sprung floor of our dance hall makes it ideal for dancing.  Please help us protect it by wearing clean, soft-soled shoes.

This alternative tuning is more resonant with nature. The singing bowls are infused with crystals and lined with gold for the purest, most therapeutic sound. You may experience deep relaxation, emotional release, increased clarity, or enhanced meditation. 

Sessions are facilitated by Dr. T,  a certified sound healing practitioner and vocalist born and raised in San Antonio, Tx. Many of these sessions are infused with traditional mariachi or ceremonial songs intended to connect the listener to deeper aspects of themselves and release old wounds. Selections are based on the astrological alignments occurring for each session.

Through this movement and meditation practice, you'll have the opportunity to begin a journey of grounding, harmonizing and innerstanding the mysteries of Mesoamerican philosophy and practices. Sessions will include singing, mini-lectures and master teachers. Ensayos are open to all ages, abilities, sizes and origins.

G. Beatriz 'Triz' Rodríguez, JD, PhD, is a San Antonio–raised educator, scholar, and Hip Hop practitioner with nearly 30 years of experience in public schools and community spaces across the US. Her groundbreaking doctoral research developed a “True” Hip Hop Education model that she later brought to life in her 9th grade Geography classroom, generating powerful student outcomes of engagement, empowerment, excellence, empathy, and equality. She co-founded Universal Style School in San Antonio in 2014, and is a leader in advancing Hip Hop pedagogy as a transformative, justice-centered approach to teaching and learning. Her bold aerosol artworks designed to uplift community, can be seen on walls across San Antonio, the US and Mexico.
