South Elliott Barker Exploratory

(Fri, 10 Jul 2026 8:30 am - 2:30 pm MST)

This hike will attempt to identify and re-trace a segment of the Elliott Barker trail south of the South Boundary trail that the Trekkers built over 30 years ago. The trail has been lost over the years due to forest fires, construction of fire breaks and non-use. We will be trying to re-trace the trail based on old maps found in the Trekkers files, and a digitized route of the trail based on those maps. From the parking area, this hike will attempt to follow the hike segments identified on pages 29, 30 and 31 in The Hiker's Guide to the Enchanted Circle by Kathy Kalen. This will include passing through/by areas identified as Fireweed Ridge, Bull Peak, Berm Pass, Luna Pass and Cuchillo de Fernando. We will attempt to identify evidence of the old trail such as trail/road tread, cairns, log tee-pees, old trail signage/markers and referenced landmarks. Much of this hike will be off-trail, will involve some bush whacking and some hiking through blowdown/deadfall.

Other Information: Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch. Hiking poles recommended. Due to nature of the hike and anticipated condition of the trail, dogs not recommended. Be prepared for weather of the day.

RSVP/Questions: Tim Kelly (505) 220-2229 or tckelly6118@gmail.com. Provide your email with RSVP and I will send you copies of map, excerpts from Kathy Kalin's book and a GPX file of the trail which you can import into Alltrails and most other hiking apps.

Hike Name: S. Elliott Barker Exploratory

Hike Leader: Tim Kelly

Date: Wednesday, July 22, 2026

Meet Time: 8:00 a.m.

Duration: Approximately 6.0 hours

Level: Class 2 (Moderate)

Distance: Approximately 6.0 Miles

Elevation Gain: Approximately 1,000 Feet

Meeting Place: Parking lot across from Fire Station No. 1

Hike Description: We will carpool to the starting point off of Forest Road 153. This hike will attempt to continue to identify and re-trace segments of the S. Elliott Barker trail that the Trekkers built over 30 years ago. This hike will attempt to follow segments of the trail identified on pages 31 and 32 in The Hiker's Guide to the Enchanted Circle by Kathy Kalen. Starting at Berm Pass we will hike to Luna Pass, on a section of trail we have already been able to identify. From Luna Pass, the hike will become more exploratory in nature as we try to identify the section of the trail that loops around Cuchillo de Fernando and onto Fernando Pass, Rincon Meadow, Rincon Pass and towards Cerro Vista. We will attempt to identify evidence of the old trail such as trail/road tread, cairns, old trail signage/markers and referenced landmarks. Some of this hike may be off trail and involve some bush whacking and some hiking through blowdown/deadfall.

Other Information: Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch. Hiking poles recommended. Due to the nature of the hike and unknown condition of some portions of the trail, dogs not recommended. Be be prepared for rain.

RSVP/Questions: Tim Kelly at (505) 220-2229
