A:

Sharing a Calendar

Do I need web page to share my calendar with others?

Not at all. You can create a calendar on our site, and distribute the address of the calendar to as many people as you want. For example, many clubs maintain a calendar here and publish the address on their newsletters. People can view (but not change) your calendar using any web browser.

What is the address of my calendar?

The address is based on the member name you supplied when you joined localendar:

//localendar.com/public/membername

So, if your member name is ‘dailyplanet’, your calendar address is //localendar.com/public/dailyplanet

How can I add a link to my calendar?

The HTML to add a link to your calendar is:

<a href="//localendar.com/public/membername">Click here to go to view my calendar</a>

If you want the calendar to open in a different window, then the HTML is slightly different:

<a href="//localendar.com/public/membername" target="_blank">Click here to go to view my calendar</a>

How can I put my calendar in a frame?

In the HTML page where you specify your Frameset, you need to add the address of your calendar as the source of the frame where you want it to display. For example, to put your calendar in the Frame called "main", you would use the following HTML:

<frame name="main" src="//localendar.com/public/membername">

Can I change the format and style of the calendar on my web page?

The style parameter makes your calendar automatically use a format you choose. Just customize the following example:

//localendar.com/public/membername?style=stylechoice

The following values for stylechoice are available:

D0 Your calendar will display the current day
W0 Your calendar will display the current week
M0 Your calendar will display the current month
D1 Your calendar will show today's events (title followed by description). If there are no activites for today, nothing will be shown.
W1 Your calendar will show the week's events (title and description), skipping days with no activities.
M1 Your calendar will show the month's events (title and description), skipping days with no activities.
This is a common style used by newspapers.

For example, to display the sample calendar in 'Week' format, use:
//localendar.com/public/membername?style=W0
(By the way, that's a zero after the W, not a capital "o")

You can also specify the start date of your published calendar by adding a start_date parameter onto the link. Here's some examples:

//localendar.com/public/membername?start_date=11/5/00
//localendar.com/public/membername?style=stylechoice&start_date=11/5/00

We're working on new calendar styles that will give you even more options!

Can I have multiple calendars?

You can create as many calendars as you want. You just need to create a different Sign-On for each one.

If I put a calendar on my site, will there be any ads?

Our free published calendars are supported by a small set of ads provided by Google. These ads are customized by Google based on your calendar content.

A membership subscription, which starts at $9.95/year (83 cents a month!), removes all ads.

A small ‘powered by localendar.com’ icon will always appear at the bottom of your calendar.

Why don't I see my events on my published calendar?

The problem is most likely that when you entered events, you left them as Private (this is the default setting; you can change it under 'Preferences'). Private events are only displayed when you're logged in. You'll need to change the events to Public.

Sign-in, and click on an event to load the Event Editor with that event's info. A few lines below the Description field are radio-buttons for Private and Public. Click Public, and remember to click Update to save your change. The event should now appear on your public calendar.

You may also notice a checkbox labeled Publish near the Public radio-button.

If your Public Event is open to anyone, check this box. This will add your event to the national localendar database. Anyone who does a search for your area will find out about your event.

Make sure to provide enough information (directions, cost, etc) in your description so that people can find your event! "By the big tree" won't help someone unfamiliar with your area.

Public Events are subject to periodic review by the localendar staff. "John's Birthday" or "Doctor's Appointment" are not local events and will be excluded from local searches.

Entering Events

How do I change or delete an event?

Click on the event in question (when you're signed in). The Event Editor will load with that event's information.

There will be 3 buttons at the top (and bottom) of the Editor : Update, Delete, and Preview. Press Delete, and the event will be removed. Or, you can make changes to the event and press Update to record them.

How do I enter a multi-day event?

On the Add Event form, click the ‘This event repeats’ checkbox to show the repeat section of the form. In the ‘Repeat Until’ portion, specify the last day of your event. Next, select all the days on which your event occurs. Then, select ‘Weekly’ as the frequency of your event.

For example, to enter an event for a multi-day Art Show that occurs from Friday, Feb 4 to Sunday, Feb 6, perform the following steps:

  1. Open the Add Event form and supply the event title, description, and time information
  2. Click the ‘This Event Repeats’ checkbox
  3. Indicate that the event repeats until February 6, 2000.
  4. Click the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday checkboxes (or click Friday and Weekends)
  5. Click the ‘Weekly’ checkbox
  6. Save your event!

How do I enter a multi-day event that repeats?

If the event occurs at least once every month, then you can use the same process that was described above. Just make sure that you adjust the ‘Repeats Until’ and ‘Frequency’ options to meet your needs. The sample calendar contains an example.

For a multi-day event that repeats each year, you’ll need to enter each day as a separate event that repeats annually.

Why do I need to supply a zip code and category for public events?

When people come to localendar and perform a search, the zip code and category of your event helps us tell them what kinds of events are happening near them.

Can anyone else see my private events?

No. We are strictly dedicated to protecting the privacy of our customers (see our Privacy Policy). Events that you designate as private can only be viewed after signing in with the member name and password you selected when you joined localendar.

Can I send multiple reminders for an event?

While you can send a reminder to multiple addresses (see below), you can only send them for a single time. You cannot, for example, be reminded of a meeting 1 day before and then 15 minutes before it occurs.

Can I send reminders to multiple e-mail addresses?

Yes. You can enter multiple e-mail and pager addresses in the Reminder portion of the Add Event form. Just separate each address with a comma.

Calendar Style

Can I add a title to my calendar?

Yes, you can. Select the Preferences option from your calendar menu. The first field allows you to specify a title. The title can also contain any valid HTML.

How do I change the colors of my calendar?

Select the Preferences option from your calendar menu. At the top of the preferences screen is a link labeled ‘Colors’. Click on it to get to the Color Preferences form. From here, you can select default colors or enter custom values. Right now, you can customize all of the colors for the Month view of your calendar. Support for changing the Day & Week view colors is coming soon.

How do I change the colors of my events?

When you add or edit an event, there is a portion of the form labeled ‘Background Color’ just after the section for editing the event description. You can either select one of the predefined colors, or enter a custom value. A custom color needs to be specified as a six-character hexadecimal value.

Can I include HTML in my calendar?

You can include any HTML in the calendar title, event title, and event description fields. Remember to preview your event before saving it. Incorrect or missing HTML syntax can lead to unpredictable results!

Examples:

The HTML to include a web address is:

<a href="//localendar.com">Click here to go to localendar!</a>

The HTML to let someone send an email is:

<a href="mailto:user@localendar.com">Send me an email</a>

The sample calendar includes several events that use HTML. You can sign in with the member name ‘sample’ and the password ‘sample’ to see how things were done.

How can I include pictures in my calendar?

The simplest HTML syntax for including pictures is:

<img border=0 src="picture">where picture is the location and name of a valid image somewhere on the internet. An example is:<img border=0 src="//localendar.com/images/localendar.gif">
localendar has a clip-art library that you are free to use with your calendar. These pictures can be included when entering the event.

Keep in mind that when you include pictures from other locations on the internet, the speed of your calendar can be affected. If the remote computer cannot supply the image quickly, your calendar’s display will slow down. That’s why we recommend the use of images from our library.

Can I view an Event's title and description at the same time?

There are two times you can see both the title & description of an event.

  1. When you are entering/editing the event information.
  2. If someone clicks on your event from a published calendar, a pop-up window with all event information is shown. We are currently refining several calendar "styles" that will allow you to publish your calendar in a format that always shows the event’s title and description.

A Group calendar is just like a normal calendar. First, create a member name for your group and then add and edit events. The members of your group can access that calendar at:

//localendar.com/public/membername

Or, you can link to the calendar from your group’s web page. We are currently developing additional options for people who want to allow different members of the group to have different privileges.

Can others in my group maintain our calendar?

Only people who know your localendar member name and password can sign-on and edit your calendar. If you share this information with members of your group, they will be able to maintain your calendar.

Can my group calendar have public and private events?

Yes, a group calendar can contain both types of events. Keep in mind that only public events are shown when you access a calendar by its address (//localendar.com/public/membername) . You must always sign-in to view Private events.

Security

How do I change my account password ?

On the left menu, click the Options button. Then, select the Security tab.

How do I change my localendar member name ?

On the left menu, click the Options button. Then, select the Security tab.

Note: If you change your member name, then the web address of your public calendar will change and you will have to update any links to localendar that you're using.

Miscellaneous

I don't have a zip code because I don't live in the USA. Can I still use localendar?

Yes, you can still use localendar to organize your personal or group schedule. We just ask that in any areas where you are required to enter a zip code that you use five zeros (00000). We can currently only send Event Reminders based on US time zones. We plan on adding full international support in the near future.

What does 'remember my logon and password' mean ?

When you sign in to localendar, your browser can \"remember\" this information. Check the box and you won't have to sign in each time you visit localendar from this same computer. If you choose, you can always click on \"sign off\" at any time. If you share your computer with other people or are at all concerned about someone else seeing or possibly editing your private events, we suggest that you do not check this box.

I checked the 'remember my logon and password' box, so why doesn't localendar log me in automatically ?

localendar is able to remember your logon and password by placing a "cookie" on your computer. Sometimes the cookie can get corrupted and will need to be replaced. If localendar doesn't remember your logon and password when you ask it to, then most likely this is what has happened. To correct the problem, you will need to delete the cookie manually by following the instructions below. Please note that no private information is stored in the cookie file. Where can I found out about cobranding localendar ?

Visit localendar.com/cobranding for all of the details.

When do my cobranding color preferences take affect ?

In order to provide the fastest response time for your cobranded members, localendar loads your cobranding color preferences only once, when each of your visitors first arrives at the site. It then "remembers" these settings until the user closes their browser. If you've recently changed your cobranding color preferences and they don't seem to be taking effect immediately, close your browser and then reopen it.
