I figured something out....so I'm closer. Look at March 6th, 2014 on http://www.localendar.com/public/GuelphLittleTheatre

The html code I used in the title is:

<div style='background:linear-gradient(to right, #ff0000 50%, #37b44a 50%)'>This is an event that uses <strong>2 areas</strong></div>

and

<div style='background:linear-gradient(to right, #ff0000 33%, #37b44a 33%, #37b44a 66%, #f7941d 66%)'>This is an event that uses <strong>3 areas</strong></div>

What I would really like is the whole box for the event being striped rather than just the title.
