For your first question go to General and the Colors tab; then if you want a background to be transparent, make or keep the field blank. I don't think it's possible to change the text color for holidays.

Correct - currently the holiday text color is fixed.

Is there a way to change the color of the holiday text yet? The red color does not fit well with my calendar colors at all!

Yes, there is a CSS hook now for overriding the default holiday color.

One simple example: Add the following text into your calendar title (or footer) under Options->General:
<style>.holiday {color:#000000}</style>
