The xls->CSV is currently the fastest route. We are looking at expanding the CSV import to include additional fields.

Regarding:
"The Outlook 2003 feature doesn't allow me to type in all the event detail "

There is a place for "Description" in the CSV. Have you looked at the sample file?

Subject,Start Date,Start Time,End Date,End Time,All day event,Description,Private
