Correct on the first statement:

I just go in as a new user, the same way some random person would create a new account, and then I'd merge and/or create a group calendar

Create your new account with a new member name (ie, BOARD)
If you want to merge Main into Board, then Board will need at least a Premium Personal subscription. Under the Premium menu on the Board calendar, you can merge in the Main calendar.
