OFFICIAL MINUTES FROM HACK MEETING February 16, 2008OFFICIAL MINUTES FROM HACK MEETING Saturday, December 16, 2008 PRESIDING: Nicole Strine, HACK President & Treasurer Great turn out! Thank you to all who came. Many votes, lots of decisions, got a lot accomplished, so here we go: Website, Calendar and Discussion Boards: Great use of them lately. Please keep up the good work. The calendar gets used more and more and I encourage all of you to add bands, plays, parties, openings, etc to it. Make sure you put your contact info on there. Nothing gets posted without contact info! St. Jack's Day: Moved to NEXT SATURDAY, February 23, 7pm start, Jimmie's Ice House near Fitzgeralds on White Oak. Illuminate yourself and your car for the processional. BLUE is the color of this event!!! Art Car Weekend Orange Show activities: Friday morning Main Street Drag, followed by a luncheon. Friday evening, Shop Talk at the Orange Show. Saturday morning, line up for the 21st Annual Houston Art Car Parade. Saturday, 1pm, Parade rolls. Saturday afternoon following Parade, post party at Discovery Green (across street from George R. Brown) Saturday late afternoon, Award's Ceremony at Discovery Green. All details will be in your packet - read your packet. Art Car Weekend Art Car Artist Activities: Wednesday evening, Welcome to Houston Party 7-11p. I will talk to Dawn at Last concert as that was the place we voted on for this event. Food, non-alcoholic beverages supplied, hopefully a keg as well. We'll vote on the flavor in the keg at the next meeting so be there if you want to have a say. Thursday evening - a "gathering" at Kennywood put on by the artists in the community. We are ball-less this year. No Art Car Ball. Susan Wingfield and Ken Crimmins are working on this with help from other artists in the community. Details will be in your parade packet. The Orange Show is not involved in this at all. This is a private party on private property and there will be no advertising, only word of mouth and via the form on your parade packet. It's a "bring your own everything to celebrate Art Car Weekend" get together. Thank you to PJS Services for providing the porta cans for this event. No public party, no charge for admission. WE WILL BE PASSING THE HAT AT EVERY MEETING WE HAVE BETWEEN NOW AND MAY 8 TO PAY FOR THIS EVENT!!! Please show up to meetings ready to vote and contribute money to this private party this year. Many details to follow. Saturday night - Illuminated Cruise. Meet/start at the Art Car Museum 8p, hopefully we'll roll by 9p. Thank you to Kenny Browning for offering, yet again, to make a route for this year's Cruise. That's a hard job, and you do it soooo well! John Mrosko has volunteered a 16 foot trailer that Hack will put 2 porta cans on and Ben Gibson will secure those porta cans to the trailer. Rebecca Bass will pull the trailer of porta cans to each stop. Thank you so much for taking care of our potty-ing needs! Sunday morning into the afternoon - HACK Hit and Run precedes a Brunch. Basically, between 1030 and 1045a that morning, you will go thru one of 4-5 drive thrus in your art car, then you'll head on over to the Brunch. Location of the Brunch TBA as we are getting ideas and permission of places that the Car-B-Que will be welcome and serving breakfast. Details will be ironed out, and at the next meeting we will vote on the drive thru locations, so be there to vote. I would like for you all to think of places like El Rey on Shepherd and Washington, especially places that mirror each other across a street, that we can "swarm" into the drive thrus. If you plan on eatting breakfast from the Car-B-Que, then just get a coffee or a drink! Nothing like a bit of commotion on a Sunday morning for fun is there? Details to follow, obviously. A huge thank you to PJS Services for donating all the food money and the portacans for this year's brunch. And another big thank you Johnny Rojas for cooking for us that morning! We will have to provide beverages, plates, utensils, napkins, and we'll discuss how we'll do that at the next meeting. So there you have it. 5 days of Art Car Weekend 2008 in Houston TX. Artists in the community really want to bring back some more of the "fun" to the weekend, that's where the Hit and Run comes in to play - thank you Tom Jones for that idea - , the Brunch for those who like the closure and want to say goodbye to the Out of Town art car artists, the Welcome to Houston Party, hopefully back at Last Concert and the "gathering" at Kennywood on Thursday. HACK's "pass the hat" treasury will be able to help out with some, but not all of these events. There will be NO online donations. We will pass the hat for the Thursday event, and discuss the others at the next meeting. Other topics of conversation: - David Haim had a friend point out that there are not any actual pictures on the HACK website of art cars. I discussed and we voted on this issue. I have purposely left pictures of art cars off the website so as not to promote a view of favoritism. There are links to photo and picture sites that provide GOBS and GOBS of pictures and there are also links to artist's private websites. Everyone was in agreement that this was a good idea. - Bryan Taylor had concerns about the Awards Ceremony. One was that he would go without a nap, but he has decided that since he's not concerned with the awards, he can go home and take a nap. Another was that there seems to be a lot of bickering from some people right after the awards are handed out about who won what, what's not fair, etc. He really doesn't want that to happen as it tends to take the fun out of the Weekend for him. He will carry an air horn to blow if/when any bickering starts. I suggested maybe anyone who does not want to partake in these conversations to wear a whistle around their neck and just blow on that when the topic comes up, with the intention of stopping the conversation. - I made it very clear that in order to vote on events and ideas, you have to be present at the HACK meeting, and at no time will there not be an instance where artists who attend events don't get the chance to vote. You are an art car artist, if you attend any event, you have the right to vote on the particulars of that event, no matter who is paying for some or all of that event. Without you and your car, there would be no art car event/weekend. - An almost unanimous vote was made for our meetings to happen on SATURDAY! So, we'll start doing that. I like it cuz there's no rush to get home because you have to be at work early the next day. I also like starting in the late afternoon, we can hang out, imbibe at happy hour, have our meeting and then maybe go to dinner somewhere, like many of us did tonight. The turn out was big too, and Darkhorse on a Saturday between 4 and 7pm is relatively empty so we tend to have the place to ourselves, which is very cool! - Fire extinguishers, sold by Bruiser for the Cub Scouts, were left at the Darkhorse, so if you forgot yours, I think Mike put them behind the bar. - Red Bull Art of the Can - www.redbullartofthecan.com for more info - will only be happening in Houston this year and will be at the Galleria. They are building out a space for the event. They are shooting for 450 entries, 150 of which will be showcased at the event. Red Bull is a HUGE supporter of the art car movement in Houston and have been very generous to the art car community. I strongly urge you to fill out a registration form as soon as possible and get to work on your art. Deadline for entries is March 29-April 6; Artist Opening Night by invitation only is the second week in July and the exhibit will be on display for 2 weeks - I think I have all that information right! If enough of us enter and get into the exhibit, I'm seeing a limo in our future for Artist Opening Night. :) - I have dash plaques for every year we've had a World Art Car Day. If you need any, let me know. - We didn't discuss the St Patrick's Day Parade, Saturday March 15 - both Johnny and I spaced! It's on the calendar, and I will send out info as I get it from Johnny Rojas who is our contact for this event.
