Filtering by Custom Categories
I'm hoping to use custom categories to output several different calendars to several different web pages from a single master calendar. Is that possible? Can't seem to find a way to do it.

Re: Filtering by Custom Categories
Hmm.. that's a very interesting idea. Sort of like anti-merging.

We don't support this feature yet.. but I am intrigued. How do you envision it working?
1) Would you like to be able to merge only specific categories from 1 calendar onto another, *or*
2) would you like to publish a calendar but only include specific categories?

If you go with option 1, you have to create multiple logins/calendars, but each one could have a custom look and feel. You might need at least Premium Basic to support merging on each calendar.

With Option 2, you wouldnt need the subscriptions, but since it's essentially 1 calendar, it would have the same look on each site.

Re: Filtering by Custom Categories
Thanx for the response. Well, let's see...

I'm the webmaster for the music department of a Massachusetts state university. We have an events calendar for the department, and I need to show the entire calendar on an events page. But I also need to show events only relating to one area of the department on that area's page. Also, I need to show the most recent two weeks worth of events in a coming events listing on the home page.

What I'd really like to be able to do, though, is tag (or categorize) events with the names of faculty members, ensembles, etc. that are involved in those events, and have those events show up on the pages for those individuals and groups. So in a way, yes, it's like an inverse merge, as you said. The important thing, though, is that I only want to have to manage a single calendar, not a bunch of page-specific calendars. In effect, it would be like a database of events, with different calls on that database from individual pages on the site. Unfortunately (believe it or not!), the university doesn't support any sort of web-based database.

Re: Filtering by Custom Categories
This is a feature that I would like as well. too many events on a community calendar is getting cumbersome to use. would like something that allows a one button search for all events in a category.

Re: Filtering by Custom Categories
Tagging is something we've gone back-and-forth about for a while (you wont see it on localendar, but we have prototypes in house with it). There are good usability reasons for it.. and then there are issues that make it more confusing. Which is why we've opted for custom categories at present; the risks of people creating "synonym" tags is the reason; with custom categories you force people to pick from a list. But you can only have 1 category.. Ah, the pluses and minuses..

I think a way to publish a calendar with only specific categories is probably something we can do as a good first step towards what you want. Let me pass this along to the dev team.
