applause   Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
This much requested feature has been added. Members may now upload their own clipart to use in their events!

This feature requires one of our premium subscriptions (see: http://www.localendar.com/elsie?JSP=/subscribe/premium_index)

In the "Add an Image to this Event" section of the Event Editor, there is a button for "My Clipart Library" which will allow you to upload and maintain your artwork on localendar.com

You may add images to the event (select Uploaded Images as the category), or to the event description (Click the small "tree" icon)

Your images are also accessible at

http://www.localendar.com/upload/yourmembername/imagefilename

This means you may also use HTML's <img> tag to add uploaded images to your event title, calendar title, or calendar footer
example:

<img src="http://www.localendar.com/upload/myname/myimage.gif"/>

You can also use your uploaded images for the calendar background! (Under Options->Colors)

Browsers can be really lousy about refreshing their javascript cache. I had this problem myself on the first machine I tried. Your best bet is to clear your browser's cache (you may also have to close/reopen it) and re-hit the site.

I'm using the library now with no problems. Please let me know if you continue to experience difficulties.

GREAT OPTION - I SIMPLY LOVE IT !

I too have experienced the similar error messages as these other members, however I think I may have stumbled upon a "work around".

I received the errors when plunging straight into attempting to upload an image. . . . I suspected that the host system did not have a directory set up, or was somehow failing to correctly set up a directory space for me . . .
HOWEVER when going through the OPTIONS - COLORS - and then selecting the MYCLIPART LIBRARY button, everything went as smooth as glass. Uploading was a piece of cake.
It appeared to me that this particular path to the CLIPART LIBRARY did the correct setups to establish 'my library space'.
my calendar may be viewed at: Blade-Tek Calendar
Hope this helps in getting things worked out for everyone.

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
The "My clipart library" code is exactly the same in both places - and it will create a directory for you if it doesn't exist. I still suspect the javascript caching. We've received a few support emails about problems, but over 5,000 events have been added since we rolled out this feature, so I think the problem is affecting a relatively small number of users.

One thing your post did expose was a small problem regarding how published images will appear (or not) when a member signed in to localendar views another localendar user's public calendar. We'll fix that immediately. (UPDATE 8/23/07: Fixed)

You may need to refresh that page before your uploaded image is in the background list.

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
Ugh. This is shaping up to be very confusing. Are you using IE or Firefox? If IE; do you see a small yellow triangle with an exclamation point in the lower left corner of your browser (after the page finishes loading)?

Can you create a sample event, and see if the image appears in the "Add an Image" to this event under "Uploaded Images". How about in the image list on the event description box (click the small tree icon and check the image list dropdown)

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
I once again refreshed the page , and still nothing in the background drop down box, I even uploaded a totally different item and isn't working either.

This is the entire reason I upgraded from the free version so that I could use my own clipart.

Can you try the test I mentioned in my previous post:

Can you create a sample event, and see if the image appears in the "Add an Image" to this event under "Uploaded Images". How about in the image list on the event description box (click the small tree icon and check the image list dropdown)

I am using IE, and no there isn't a small yellow triangle with an exclamation point.

I did add a test event and yes my uploaded item did show up, just not in the background list.

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
OK; enough with the cache clearing everyone - that clearly isn't the problem.

The images apparently appear in other parts of the calendar (tx, goshenband), so the upload is working correctly.

It also sounds like there isn't a javascript problem (no yellow triangle) - so there must be another reason some of you are having a problem seeing the background image list.

What I notice about both of your calendars (gundriver & goshenband) is that you both have themes selected. I'm willing to bet that somehow the theme is bypassing the code that includes custom backgrounds in the image list. Let me chase that down as our new top suspect.

OK - NOW let's everyone give it a try.

And btw, you'll probably want to set the day and/or weekend date blocks to have a transparent background so your image will show through.

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
The only uploaded image I see that you have is "clear_banner.jpg"

If you had another image, the way to have it display with an event is to expand the "Add an image to this event" section, and select the "Uploaded images category".

You can also add an u/i'd image to the event description by clicking the little picture of the Tree in the description editor toolbar.

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
I use the month view on our website, and my uploaded clipart makes the calendar have uneven sizing. If there is an image in a day, for example, the calendar is wider to accommodate the image (even though the image is relatively small), but days without an image shrink to almost nothing. Help!

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
Without seeing your page, I can still describe what's going on..

The calendar *wants* to fit to the space you've given it (or rather, your browser wants to fit it to the space). The alternative is to add horizontal scroll bars to give it enough room, which doesn't make the presentation look too nice.

If you want to go this route (assuming you are using the interactive embedded calendar), change this parameter:
scrolling=no
to
scrolling=yes

and make the width a length that works for your content.

Ultimately, you can't put 10 pounds of baloney in a 5lb sack, so something's gotta give.

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
It should be clarified here and on the My Clipart screen that clip art images to appear on the calendar need to be thumbnail size to not mess up the calendar.

I have had people load full size pics and this causes the last two days of the week (Fri and Sat) to be cut off the calendar.

I find that for my calendar at least, images to be seen on the calendar should be maximum 130 pixels wide.

Images that appear in the description can be larger, however.

Posted by mygig at Jan 17, 2009, 12:50:40 PM
Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
It's a great feature! However, please clarify on the My Clipart screen that this is intended for thumbnail images.

I have had some people upload more full size images to the calendar and this messes up the last day or two (Fri/Sat) on the calendar.

When they do this, I inform them after resizing and re-uploading the image as a thumbnail that such images should be a max of 130 pixels wide.

It's as simple as keeping an uploaded clip art to stay within certain parameters.

That's all good, but as I've reported many times now, Clip Art uploaders should be alerted on the Clip Art upload page that this for appearance on the calendar is meant for thumbnail images only.

Larger images clip off the last one or two days (depending on size) of the month's calendar. So, as I've said previously, too large (non-clip art size) simply clips off the Friday or Saturday (one or both depending on the pix size) cuts off the final one or two days of the calendar weekend gigs.

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
Actually, it's not an issue due solely to clipart. Depending on how many events you add, custom html, etc and the calendar Publishing style you are using (especially the "fully interactive embedded calendar" which uses an iFrame) you may need to adjust other calendar settings.

We don't specifically dictate clipart dimensions for this reason. If your members are uploading large images, you might want to "approve" events before they are published.

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
I've posted this several times now, but nothing seems to get done about it in spite of assurances long ago.

Somewhere on the Clip Art page, there's a need to let people know that for an image to appear on the calendar, it needs to be only a thumbnail image.

Anything larger messes up the calendar and depending on the size of image uploaded as clip art, it may cut off the last day or three of the on-line calendar.

Can something not be added to the screen as an alert about this?

I keep on having to let my posting public know that they should restrict images to not larger than 130 pixels wide to prevent cutting off the last day or so on the calendar.

Posted by mygig at Feb 10, 2009, 3:31:31 PM
Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
That's fine, but what's the harm in specifying that only thumbnail size images apply without specifying any dimension.

As I have many posters, it's simply too onerous to have to approve everything before its appearance on the calendar.

Is there a process for at least approving what's uploaded as clip-art?

When I notice incidentally in the clip-art list or on the calendar that someone has uploaded an image that's too large, I save and resize it and re-upload it as a thumbnail to replace the too large image. However, in the meantime until I notice the problem, it messes up the calendar.

Posted by support at Feb 12, 2009, 2:22:52 PM
Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
The issue with restricting the size of uploaded images (even to 130px) is that you are only considering the effect on the month-block calendar view. Images of significantly larger sizes can work perfectly well on alternate calendar layouts (like month list)

Auto-approving an event, but making the clip-art available for separate review would be both clunky and confusing to all parties.

I'm not aware of any "assurances" we had made, beyond being willing to to entertain whatever possible solutions members are willing to suggest. The key point is that an enhancement can't be specific to 1 particular calendar view, nor should it introduce an experience that would be user-unfriendly to either members or visitors.

My Custom ClipArt Not to Tile - and a Scroll Bars Question
I am a new user, have premium webmaster service, and have to be able to upload my own custom clipart. I need to know the correct size and/or proportions for a custom image, because when the calendar gets two events on the same day, for example, the frame resizes and makes the clipart tile, which makes the calendar look amateur and broken. For example, the person's head is reappearing underneath the same original photo of their head and body.

Also how to get rid of the scroll bars in Safari or Opera, etc? My friend uses a Mac with Safari and his calendar looks different than my browser. He has scroll bars and the image appears in a different position than my computer with Firefox and IE.

Re: My Custom ClipArt Not to Tile - and a Scroll Bars Question
I am guessing on the tiling bit that you are talking about a background image. That's the only place we tile an image. Everyplace else is 1:1. You have 2 options in this case: Put the calendar in a container (eg <div>) that restrict it to a size so that it never causes the tiling, or 2) make the image big enough (or add spacing) so that no tiling ever occurs.

The "2 events and it resizes" and scrollbars comments don't give me a lot of info. Let me take a crack at the 2nd one: If you are using an iframe, then you can add
SCROLLING=NO
to your iframe. Just make sure the
height
is large enough to accomodate all your events. Even with scrolling=no, some browsers might add a scrollbar if the frame height is too small for the content.

Tried to use this for the first time. I was successful at uploading apparently but the uploaded images do not appear. Nowhere that I can find does it indicate what size and other specs are required for the graphics uploaded. Don't you think it would be nice to give that info? It looks like a 320p won't be automatically reduced to fit whatever the spec is, so what do you require? Maybe 30x20? Something else?

Re: Announcing: Upload Your Own ClipArt
Hi Henry,

You seem to have two concerns:
1) The uploaded images do not appear
2) You would like more info on the image size (or be able to resize it?) afterwards

The images are not resized; whatever size you upload is the size that will be used. There is no "correct" size; you may want a large image for a calendar background, a small image for an event shown on the month-view, or a medium sized image for an event's description box. We assume that you will size the image correctly before you upload it.

If you don't though, we do offer the ability to resize an image when you use it in an Event Description. When you click on the Insert/Edit button in the Description taskbar, the image list will contain images you have uploaded. After inserting one, you can re-size it as desired.

I am not sure about your issue seeing images (#1) since your concern about re-sizing them would seem to be in contradiction. Using images is described in this page in our docs:
http://www.localendar.com/docs/display/lc/Uploading+your+own+Images
