Thank you to all who attended and thank you to Kohn’s for letting us use his space. He was nice enough to turn off the music so we could all hear. This will be our last 5pm meeting before Art Car Weekend so artists have more time to work on their cars in the daylight (Kirk’s request last year). We started by handing out real glass bead strands from Terry Brooks (he and Marilyn have been recovering from the nasty flu). They used to throw real glass beads instead of plastic ones at Mardi Gras “in the beginning”. I also put out sales fliers from Jerry’s Artarama, near Willowbrook Mall – very good prices and great sales, worth the drive. That’s the place I sent you all an email about with a 20% off coupon attached. Welcomed new-comers Faith, Andrew and Kimberley, and not so new comers Ford and Carlton. Carlton just got back from MN where he hung around with the art car artists there, filmed some who are coming to Houston and wanted to make sure we knew that Houston’s Art Car Weekend is considered the art car Mecca of the world as far as art car parades go. Updates on Jay Goldberg, Al Bartell and Bryan Taylor: Jay is recovering at his parent’s house, getting out more, walking as much as possible to assist in bone healing. He’d love visitors. Karen is busy in tax season. You can email him if you want to visit. Big Al is recovering well from what I’m reading on Face Book. We’re all very lucky still have them both in our lives. Bryan’s recovery after saving all those puppies from that burning building is wonderful – he’s looking and feeling better, but still needs a new used CHEAP car that has air conditioning. $1000 is his max. Kirk’s Jesus Monkey Car was repaired, so we didn’t lose a daily driver – yay!! Lights in the Heights representatives made slanderous comments about the Houston Art Car Klub and art cars in general as a group with regard to behavior during their past Lights in the Heights events/parade. These accusations are false, with no merit. I was pursuing this with a vengeance, and now as I have time, because I will not have art cars and/or their artists talked about falsely in a negative manner. Everyone I contact is too busy to meet with me, but I’m not leaving it alone. While many art car artists don’t care about coordinating with the LITH event coordinators or being in their parade, a few still do… but that’s not the point. The point is that talking false negatives about the art car community cannot be tolerated. This group has always listened if there has been a complaint and taken corrective action if necessary. We aren’t being given that option with this event’s coordinators. St. Jack’s Day was a lot of fun – thank you so much Amy Meadors for making Jack’s birthday cake again! NYE 2009 HACK Houston was fun (and chilly) for us this year. We were a bit separated, some in Austin, some in Houston, but big thanks to Kohn’s for letting us play on their property! The idea is to always have a party where we can all be together, enjoying each other's company without having to drive all over town with the drunks. HACK CALENDAR: Please put your events on the HACK calendar as soon as possible! I am getting calls from other cities wanting to produce art car events and parades and am being asked what dates are open. I refer all these people to the HACK calendar. If you have an ev nt, opening, movie showing, ANYTHING you think Klub members would like to participate in, please put it on the calendar. David Haim has organized a field trip to the “Nifty Fifties” near Tomball. We will caravan as an art car group, but when we get there we will not be the stars of the show, we will not assemble together outside or inside their coned off area, we will simply park, then wander in and look around at the cool classics that are parked inside their perimeter. Please see the calendar for more details on June 26th. Light up Galveston is happening again with our same organizers, John and Kim Ritter. That event is Saturday, Galveston, June 12th. Calendar will be updated with info and info will be sent out to the list as I get it. March 20th is the opening bout of the Houston Roller Derby. Jake has organized an art car gathering before the Derby. He can get you tix for $10, but needs at least a 1 week notice. Please see the calendar for details. St. Patrick’s Day Parade – on the calendar, March 13; Thank you Johnny Rojas for organizing art cars for the Parade. The HEB Bayou City Classic is that same morning – see the calendar. Nicole Strine and her sis-in-law Kim Granneman, will have an art opening reception of their work on canvas, Saturday, March 6, 11a-4p, Modern Furniture - next door to, and owned by, the same people with Wind Water Gallery. 508 19th Street, during Heights First Saturday. There will be a crawfish boil going on the parking lot!! See calendar. Tracey Bautista is having a gallery opening reception at her new studio on Friday, March 26, 6-9p - Hardy/Nance Street Studios, 902 Hardy – see calendar. Shelley Buscher and Rebecca Bass are looking for other artists to share rent and work space at their studio near the intersection of I-45 and North Main. The property is owned by “Officer Frank”, friend of Ben, Will and Julian. He is the officer you might have seen news reports on recently. He was shot while off duty in his apartment complex when he tried to stop some burgelers. Please drop them an email if you are interested. Shannon asked if HACK is a non-profit and I explained the history and idea of HACK again, that we never intended or had the desire to be a non-profit due to the amount of work and no one willing to step up and take it on. Jake Goldstein was at the meeting and is on the Board of Art Cars of Houston, Inc. He explained that the difference between the local non-profit organization, started by Evelyn Fasnacht last year to further the art car movement in Houston, and HACK would be that more events could get funding from corporations and companies who can easily work with non-profits, but not with “clubs”, like we are. 2010Art Car Weekend: All events related to Art Car Weekend, including the Kick Off and Volunteer parties, workshops and other related events and meetings are being put on the HACK calendar. As far as the Weekend goes, the Orange Show is producing the Art Car Ball, with the help of the local art car community, the Main Street Drag, Sneak Peek at Discovery Green, the Parade and the Awards Ceremony and brunch at the Continental Club. See the calendar for dates and details. The Houston Art Car Klub will be producing Wednesday’s Welcome to Houston Party, Saturday post parade gathering, and Saturday night’s Illuminated Cruise. Re Orange Show events: The Art Car Ball is being produced by the Orange Show and will be at their warehouse complex by the Orange Show with help of volunteers and artists. There is a large grassy lot between the Monument and the warehouse space. Parking for the public is already taken care of. The idea is to have the party around and about the art cars, not party in one place, art cars in another. The Steering Committee consists of Marilyn Brooks, Ben Gibson and Rebecca Bass, to start. Advanced ticket sales will start by early next week, or late this week. THE ORANGE SHOW MUST HAVE 200 TICKETS SOLD BY APRIL 19 IN ORDER TO PROCEED WITH THE BALL. HACK voted yes in helping with these ticket sales. 200 tickets will only cover HALF of the hard costs of the Ball. The person who sells the most tickets to the Ball between the time they go on sale to the time the Ball starts wins 2 free round trip tickets on Continental Airlines to any place they travel in the continental US, Porto Rico, etc. !! Every artist who brings their art car to the Ball gets 2 free tickets into the Ball, will be fed dinner and will share a keg of beer before the start of the Ball. So, basically, we park our art cars, chow and drink, then play the rest of the night!! More info about the Ball will make it’s way to you. The Art Car Parade’s Grand Marshall this year is Dan Aykroyd. His art car entry representing his newest venture, Crystal Head Vodka, will be in the parade too. Parade Entry Forms are now available online at www.orangeshow.org Re: Houston Art Car Klub events Wednesday’s Welcome to Houston Party – by vote will be at Last Concert Café Saturday’s Post Parade gathering needs to be decided. It was decided that food and air conditioning is a must. Teo’s Mexican was mentioned. Please bring your suggestions to the next meeting WHERE IT WILL BE VOTED ON BY THOSE IN ATTENDANCE. Saturday Night’s Illuminated Cruise – it was voted on that it should still happen. Now we just have to find out who might be willing to write that route….. (Kenny I hope!)
