I added an event description and was told that I had too many characters. I didn't, but I deleted everything and then tried to save. Same error. The product's useless if I can't add descriptions or save events.

The total character count also considers any markup you may have added in addition to the regular letters.
Without seeing what you entered, I can't tell if you had any empty tables or other formatting (or perhaps if you pasted text directly from another program)

If you see this error message again, you can check the "real" text by looking at the actual HTML markup (the little HTML icon)

With over 4 million events in our database, I'm pretty sure members are able to add events.
