Edit this Post   Searching by specific data fields (Categories, location, title/description) and other questions! Reply to this Post

Let me first say that I absolutely love this website that pretty much blows what Google Calendar has currently in creating a Group friendly calendar. So much so I jumped on the premium subscription.

Some questions I had:

1) For searches, is it possible to specify what column I'm searching under (Title/Description/Category/Location/Date)? Also are there special wildcard characters we can use to encapsulate a string such as "Boston, MA" or a set of strings?

2) Is there a setting that needs to be enabled to allow local searches to include my events? In the event editor I had checked off public and publish as local event and added in the location zip code but my events still aren't showing up. Also is there a date set for creating local searches only against my calendar?

3) ical Google Calendar import. I found that links in the description are just showing up as the display string not as a clickable URL like in my localendar. Is that a bug?

4) Mobile Device ETA? :D

Thank you again for the great work!

Let's see:
1) Right now, searches automatically examine the event title and description. We think a simple search meets most requirements. If we added an advance search, what features would you like to see? I believe the underscore(_) can be used as a wildcard for 1 character, and percent-sign(%) for a variable-length string.

2) Local searches currently cannot be restricted to a single calendar. But it sounds like your event should be returned as a result. Would you mind sharing its title, as well as the location you are entering in your search?

3) iCal doesn't formally support HTML (which means no links!) in an imported file. However, I believe Microsoft pioneered support for an optional field called " X-ALT-DESC" which does support HTML (and links). We recently added support for this field, so if you unsubscribe from your calendar in Google and then re-subscribe, you might get your links and other formatting. I am not sure if Google supports this extended field.

4) Yeah - I hear you on that one. It has been in progress for too long. We have tried a number of approaches (and abandoned them at various stages) to try and offer a well-integrated, cross-platform, user friendly solution. And we just haven't found a solution that we are pleased with. It is definitely something that we are always working on.

Thank you!

Here is my calendar
http://www.localendar.com/public/district45

I definitely like to be able to filter in on a category in the search since the way I have my calendar organized I'm putting together events for 6 different states so I put them into categories that share the same name just different state abbreviations such as:

CT - Instructor Training
MA- Instructor Training
VT - Instructor Training

The way the searches work I'm not able to just put in Instructor Training to get ALL the events together unless I know exactly the title and description of the event.

Right now I think everything should be published as public but so far putting in any zipcodes or full street addresses are returning nothing in the global search

Hmm.. As an alternative idea.. why not create custom categories for each state, and then let the user filter on those? That way, they could just click on the box for "Zumba CT" for example, and move about the calendar without seeing the MA events.

I know that still doesn't address the custom field element.. just wondering if that might be easier. It might solve the problem though of a user not knowing what different types of events are available (since you can create categories for Training, Open Sessions, Members Only, etc)

That's sort've what I did already....

I hope you can implement a better searching capability that lets you filter down by a specific category/custom category.

Also were you able to see why none of my published events are showing up in the global database?

Yes, I'm sorry that there seems to have been a glitch on our side causing the location of the event to not be correctly added to our searchable database.

If you open any of your published events and click "Update", they should be correctly show up in the search results.

Is there an update going on? My calendar event popups are being directed to localhost and failing...

Also the publish to event is now only a check box without the zip code box? confused

Popups are fixed (per my comments in the other threads)

Yes, the zip option was removed b/c
1) It is US-only, and we now support local event searching across the globe
2) You now specify the event location in the field for that purpose (under the description)

At some point in mid-Jan, an older version of that page (with the Zip) was pushed back into production, which caused the problem you encountered.

If you simply open events that don't appear in the Search results, and click Update, the location will be updated properly, and the events should now appear.

Thank you Marc! smile

Verified the global database is now showing all my events! I hope one day there might be a way to make this location search work on just my own calendar so I don't see other events that are not part of mine.

Again great calendar! Just need more custom search capabilities!
