Is there a problem with the server? For the last few days when I go to my localendar page it takes a long time to show the page. Sometimes as long as 30 seconds. This is happening on my two computers and phone. Other websites are normal. Or is it just me?

I'm having exactly the same problem in the last few days. Most times it takes up to 15-20 seconds for my Localendar to appear on my website, and other times only 2-4 seconds. Earlier today it was taking 5-6 seconds just changing months on the Localendar once it had appeared.

I also have Localendar set up so it will open (for me) without loading my website. The same problem happens.

And when I was logging into this forum site, clicking to post, etc., it was taking about 15 seconds for each step.

P.S. I just added an event to my localendar. The steps consisted of going to a date in a previous month, making changes, doing a Preview, then a Save As for a future date, and going to that new month & date. It took over 5 MINUTES! Most of the time was spent, 'waiting for localendar.com'.

So there is a real problem somewhere on the localendar end.

Harry

Google must have bought this website and they are preparing to shut it down. This is sad to me. I have used localendar.com for years and hate to see it abandoned.

lol - where the heck is that coming from?

First, we are not going anywhere

Second, unfortunately you don't just "connect to localendar.com". If you are using windows and run "tracert localendar.com" from the command line, you will see the various "hops" your traffic takes to get from your device to our servers (and the time it takes for each one). You might be surprised at how indirect your connection actually is. And unfortunately, a slow-down in even 1 part of the internet's infrastructure can make a site seem slow.

Third, we use several independent monitoring services to validate that our servers are performing correctly (example https://www.webpagetest.org)
We haven't seen any indications of global/widespread issues, but I will check with our internal/external providers and see if I can get any more info.

Oh - I should mention one other quick thing (in case it applies)

If you are importing from external live calendars (iCal), any slowdown or performance problems on those sites will also affect localendar, since we do not cache these feeds and refresh them dynamically each time your calendar is viewed. That doesn't address what OPWebmaster and searsfamily have raised (since it wouldn't affect forums, editing events, etc) but I wanted to mention it.

Hi Marc,

First let me say I love localendar! I have looked at a bunch of other online calendars and they just don't do what I want. So please don't sell to Google! biggrin

The reason I made the comment was because I had received no response to my post (except from another user with the same issue). I tried to not be too nasty because there might be a very valid reason for the lack or response such as an illness or death. One website I use has had no response from the owner for years. Not sure how they keep it running.

Back to my issue. Localendar.com is my home page. It is the first thing I look at when I turn on my computer every day. One day I noticed it took 15 to 30 seconds to load the page. It usually takes much less than 5 seconds. All my other websites seemed normal. I gave it a couple of days before posting.

While waiting for things to get back to normal I checked out a bunch of online calendars. And, darn it, you guys still have the best one (for me).

Today I noticed it was almost back to normal so I came here to see if anything was happening. Your response took 15 days which is why I got the feeling the site had been abandoned.

I understand about all the hops that must be made to get to a server. The sudden change in localendar and no change in other sites made me wonder what was happening.

Thanks for a great site and it looks like things are getting back to normal.

Hi Marc,

Wow, WebPageTest.org is very cool. Haven't seen that one before. Great info for a couple of websites I maintain.

Thanks,
Don

Looks like I spoke too soon. I did a comparison on WebPageTest.com of localendar.com vs. localendar.com/public/searsfamily. The first one loaded right away. My personal page took 21 seconds to show anything (see attached screen grab).

Just FYI. Love localendar. Hope you can find the problem.

We are still looking into why some people are experiencing a slowdown to see if there is anything we can adjust (for example, ad providers, other caching, restricting some external facing items on localendar that seem to attract inevitable hackers, etc)

We have made a few changes today and I think there is an improvement (please share your experience). I was able to duplicate some delays both on loading and changing months, which was useful in racking down some of the items mentioned above.

btw, Google ads should load asynchronously, so while webtest will report something like "5 seconds" (or more) for a calendar load, the actual user experience should be much better since the calendar will display long before google ads finish.

Just an update on this - we are still seeing if there are any other changes we can make to address performance (again, we are limited once content leaves our servers)

Another tool we use is Google Pagespeed Insights
https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights

We will frequently test with members' public calendars to make sure they are well-optimized for the web. We like to see a green (A) score in all cases (though sometimes we cannot optimize custom HTML and images a member may have added)

Two sample calendars we tested recently are
https://localendar.com/public/aroundthecabin
and
https://localendar.com/public/searsfamily

2 very different calendars if you look at them, but both score very well on Google Pagespeed
