During my trail period I had the options set to notify me when a event was added and after testing it several times didnt get this feature to work. I am wondering why this didnt work and if I were to upgrade my service would I have the same issue. thank you for your time.

We've had issues w/ email on and off (oh, the searches you could do...)

My first suggestion would be to make sure they're not being mistaken as spam, and my next.... searches on the forums for email, reminders, etc.
