I do the website for two City parks. I find Localendar great for listing (and easily changing) events, along with its ability to be able to pop-up a lot of text/links about the event. For events of a more general nature for visitors, or generic info, I just list those on my website pages. But for the past year, with the Covid-19 virus, information about masks, use of public buildings, social distances, etc., sometimes change daily! So updating my website, building & publishing it, then checking almost every browser that people use to make sure there are no mistakes, takes a lot of time. It would be much easier if I could put a blank rectangle on my Home page (say 850px x 275px) that was created by Localendar. Then I could update these changes quickly and easily, without requiring me to update my website. Is something like this possible in Localendar, and if so, would I need to pay for another subscription? If it is not available, does your firm (or some other firm) make a program that would fit my needs? Thanks in advance, Harry Ward |

Well, it wasn't possible until about 10 minutes ago, but since you asked, we did something for you ![]() Here's the solution we cooked up. Let's talk about where the content for one of these "Announcements" (that's what we're calling them) will come from. It makes sense to use localendar's existing Events as a template. Create a public event on your calendar (the date doesn't matter - it can be far in the past, the future, whatever). The title and time don't matter either. All that users will see is what is in the Event Description. You can use custom formatting, include images, etc. Save the event, and make sure it's Public. Now, go to your public calendar view and click on the event. It will open in a pop-up window. This window is not exactly what you want. It has the title, the time, the export buttons, the Close button, etc. But it's close! Copy the url of that pop-up window to your clipboard. It will look something like this: http://localendar.com/event?DAM=PublishedEvent&m=605747&event_id=2&calendar_id=605747&more_info=N&export_date=Jan%2029,%202021&category=1 Now, using Notepad or some other editor, change the word PublishedEvent to PublishedAnnouncement (Optional, you can also delete everything from &more_info to the end) Now you have a url that looks like this: http://localendar.com/event?DAM=PublishedAnnouncement&m=605747&event_id=2&calendar_id=605747 Try out that url! You will see it displays a generic page with just the Event Description (that's where you'll put the text you want on your site) Getting this content in a box on your site is very easy if your site allows you to include custom html or an iframe. You basically want to put something like this on your page: <iframe src="//localendar.com/event?DAM=PublishedAnnouncement&m=605747&event_id=2&calendar_id=605747" height="200" width="300" ></iframe> Note that in the src attribute above I just specified //localendar.com instead of http://localendar.com or https://localendar.com. That will make sure the content displays correctly depending on whether your users access your site via http or https. That's it! That content will now be displayed on your site. You can update it through localendar's Event Editor and the changes will appear automatically. You won't have to update your website manually. In the future we might provide an easier way to generate the Announcements url, but that's not bad for a Friday ![]() ---------------------------------------- Marc Higgins Support Associate, localendar.com Follow us on Twitter! http://www.twitter.com/localendar_news ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by support at Jan 29, 2021, 9:50:23 PM] |

Mark: What great quick work! The positives: 1. I have no problem creating an iframe. I do it in several places on my website. 2. I got through the first step. I had no problem creating the event. I got the URL of the pop-up window. Here it is: http://localendar.com/event?DAM=PublishedEvent&m=523172&event_id=1229&calendar_id=523172&more_info=N&export_date=Dec%2001,%202020&category=1 But when I changed PublishedEvent to PublishedAnnouncement, all I get is a white screen and no pop-up. Here it is: http://localendar.com/event?DAM=PublishedAnnouncement&m=523172&event_id=1229&calendar_id=523172&more_info=N&export_date=Dec%2001,%202020&category=1 Also, I don't want to publish this on my actual website until I have it all set up the way I want it (and tested). So I have a 2nd website that contains just a few pages. Anyone can access it, but the URL is not published. I test all new ideas on it first. As I remember Mark, you can access my localendar setup page. On the left column, down below the Standard/Premium options, there is an entry with two choices. the first is the calendar setup I use for my website. The second was for something I was testing a couple of years ago, but there is no associated website. I would like to delete that 2nd item, and replace it with my test website. But this was set up so long ago that I have no idea if you did it for me, or if you told me how to do it, and I forgot! So I need to know how to replace that 2nd entry with my test website. Harry |

The first issue is easy: The reason the page is blank is because your event does not have any information in the Description area. Only the description (not the title, time, etc) is shown on the PublishedAnnouncement version. The second calendar on the list on the left was one that was shared with your OPwebmaster account. Basically, from the OJPpatrol account, you made OPwebmaster a delegated administrator. I've removed that relationship so it should no longer appear as a calendar you can admin from your OPwebmaster account. ---------------------------------------- Marc Higgins Support Associate, localendar.com Follow us on Twitter! http://www.twitter.com/localendar_news |

Mark: OK, I went back and reread everything that you wrote. I also set up a new test where I placed words (Home Page Events) in the description section. Then I changed the resulting url script words PublishedEvent to PublishedAnnouncement, and deleted everything from &more_info on. I opened my web building program, created a box, and set up an iframe using just //localendar as you suggested. Then I built my Friends website, and the box showed. I then went back to my localendar page, created an entry with 'test to see if updates', made sure it was a Public event, and Saved it. That all worked fine, although it took a very long time for this to appear. Much much longer than when just updating my localendar calendar. You can see the results here: http://www.friendsofottawapark.org/ just scroll down to the bottom of the Home page (and ignore the test music). But nothing has worked since. I tried to add another entry yesterday, but it was not added. I also tried that again today, and still nothing added. So what did I do wrong? Do I have to delete the first entry first, so I am essentially replacing that one with another one, or ??? I also have a somewhat unrelated question. On the 'Add Event' page, below the Description section, there are Text Color: and Background Color: entries. Do they override the settings I made on the Options->Colors page? Sometimes they seem to, and other times they don't. Harry |

I changed the description on your test event to read "This is a test" and it updated on your site immediately for me (as it should) It's possible your browser is set to cache pages (try pressing Ctrl-F5 to refresh the page and see if that changes the text you see) I believe the color fields on the event are supposed to override the default settings under Options. If you can give me an example of an event where they do not, I'm happy to take a look. ---------------------------------------- Marc Higgins Support Associate, localendar.com Follow us on Twitter! http://www.twitter.com/localendar_news |

Mark:
I found my mistake, thanks to your wording above. I was trying to ADD another event, rather than CHANGE the one I created. I changed your text, and it immediately changed the text to what I wrote. So thanks to your work, it seems we have a winner. I am going to make it larger and closer to what I envision. Also to add some colored text and images (w/ links). I'll let you know how it goes.
If I run into that again, I'll let you know. Harry |

If you want, you can create multiple events for different parts of your site - you aren't limited to just 1 "announcement". Just create a different event for each, and modify the url per my original instructions. Good luck! ---------------------------------------- Marc Higgins Support Associate, localendar.com Follow us on Twitter! http://www.twitter.com/localendar_news |
