It would be awesome if our calendar entries could have categories that we make and then we could assign colors to categories so every type of event would have it's own color rather than manually doing this.

One reason we have held off from custom categories is for our "local events search" feature. Our concern has been that once people create custom categories, we can no longer offer site visitors the ability to look for local events within a reasonable number of categories (there could suddenly be thousands to choose from)

If you had custom categories, do you think you would still wish to mark events in them as publically searchable?

Would you consider adding a "Private" or "Internal Use" editable category field that would be importable to outlook and other programs. This would allow your calendar features to work and meet our needs.

Actually, we have been considering moving away from categories to let people tag events as they please. The tag would carry over to the outlook export, so assuming you used a tag consistently I think it would meet your need.
