There was an old thread about Firefox not displaying the calendar like it does in IE. is there anything I can do to make the calendar appear the same in both browsers?

The calendar displays should be the same across browsers. There are some issues with running certain sections of the localendar "customizer" (where you set color preferences) under other browsers, and the Task Editor is IE only, but the calendars themselves should display correctly across almost anything. There are a number of small tweaks in the generated HTML to make them cross-browser friendly.

Have you noticed any discrepancies?
