How do I delete a recurring item. It will allow me to delete them individually but who do I delete the whole series?

You should be able to delete the series if it was saved as a recurring event. Just click the event and it will take you to the "edit" screen where you can choose "delete".
You can also choose to delete a series of events under the "options" tab. However, this option is used more for deleting a mass of events at once. It will basically erase your calendar's events with a date range.
