When the public looks at our calendar, they see, below it, buttons for all the calendars merged into the master calendar.
How can I get rid of those buttons, as the sub-calendars are not meant to be consulted alone.?

I'll have to check into that. We've always had that legend for merged calendars, but I can understand a preference to have it hidden.
