So, at http://www.localendar.com/public/lsumusic - the source feed has apostrophes and curly quote marks in it which are being turned into black diamonds with question marks.

Can this be fixed/overridden? About a month and a half ago when I tried out Localendar it was able to display the quote marks just fine, but now they are all black diamonds with question marks in them.

I would be all biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin if there is a solution to this :)

Interesting behavior... the page is encoded as UTF-8, which means all kinds of special & international characters are supported.

It appears the character encoding issue is only on imported iCal events. These events should also be converted to UTF-8. I'll have to look into the iCAL feeds you are importing and see how they are coming across.

Thanks! Keeping my fingers crossed - I knew it had something to do with UTF-8 encoding but beyond that I'm not too savvy on the issue.

Upgraded our to premium yesterday for one year!

Here are the direct links to some of the feeds where this issue happens:

http://hq.music.lsu.edu/icals/ical_ENSEMBLE.ics
http://hq.music.lsu.edu/icals/ical_FACULTY.ics
http://hq.music.lsu.edu/icals/ical_GUEST.ics

We are hoping to eventually transition to an all-new calendaring system where the coding is all up to date and shiny; but in the meantime I would love for the calendar to look pretty until we make the transition!

We spent a lot of time looking at this problem..
Mostly, we looked at this event as an example:

LSU Men‘s Glee and Women‘s Chorale

That is pasted right from the Google iCalendar export. We tried numerous methods of reading the raw calendar file as UTF-8, yet that character never displayed correctly.

Further investigation showed that Google may have a problem encoding their iCal export as UTF-8.

And in another strange test, we created a Google calendar, added the curved apostrophe along with some other special characters, exported that, and all of those special characters came across as garbage.

Which really makes the whole situation really frustrating, since we can't tell what Google is actually doing (nor can we see your Google calendar specifically). Can I ask if you have set any special language on your calendar? How is the curved quote being entered? It's not on a standard PC keyboard. Are these events possibly being pasted in from some other application?
