I find it really annoying that it shows all american things like presidents day and thanksgiving. Is there an option to 'hide' the holiday symbols, or change fom american settings?? most of them don't apply to us here in the UK.

You can always go to Options --> Events and un-check the US holidays. This will include all holidays such as Christmas, etc. Then save your preferences.
