hi,

I searched localendar.com and googled "localendar.com account" and "localendar.com payment" and searched Options and Options/Security and I cannot find anything having to do with payments.

I didn't realize that automatic withdrawals have been happening from my paypal account. I never got notices when these happened from localendar or from paypal.

How do I change it? I want to pay from a credit card.

The best way would be to Cancel the automatic renewal of your subscription (via your Paypal account)

Then, when your current subscription runs out, you can re-subscribe. I believe Paypal will let you pay via a CC and not link it to your account (if they do enforce this, you can still cancel the automatic renewal afterwards as I mention above)

There could in some circumstances be a problem with cancelling the automatic payment in Paypal, and/or with adding a credit card payment. Suppose the current subscriber becomes suddenly unavailable for whatever reason, or is unable to carry out that step (is hit by a beer truck, etc) – how can a new person take over the calendar and the payments? That person would not have access to the currently used Paypal account.

I strongly believe there needs to be a method by which a new person (who legitimately logs in to the localendar account) can change the payment method without having access to the previous person's Paypal account. This is essential, not a 'nice to have'.

P.S. If I were to cancel the Premium status, then shortly thereafter apply for it again, would that create a payment scheme that uses the stripe.com system? That might be easier for a new person to 'inherit', because we could dedicate the stripe.com account solely to this purpose, and then share the login information in advance of the need.

I think you asked a few different questions..

Let's take the case of the proverbial unlucky person who is hit by a bus.
The first issue is (payment or not) - can the new owner take control of the calendar (assuming they were not already set up as a delegated admin).

The answer is no, not directly. They would have to reach out to us and take a few actions (which I won't list for security purposes) to demonstrate they are the new owner of the account, after which time we will reset the email and pw on the account.

If the account has an active subscription, there is no reason to change the payment info until the current subscription ends. It's already been paid through the end of that period.

Even if you were to cancel the subscription, that would only stop the auto-renewal (which would presumably fail anyway, since the current owner is no longer with us). Again, this is because the subscription is already paid through the end of the period.

It would be like what happens if the person had a magazine subscription and was hit by a bus. You wouldn't call up Entertainment Weekly and say "I want to change the payment!". You would receive the magazine until the subscription expired, and then if you wanted to still receive the magazine, you would sign up for it yourself.

But let's say the bus crash wasn't fatal (to continue our analogy) but the person was no longer able to come to work and you wanted to "take over" the subscription. Well, first you would need to take over the account. Only now it's easier b/c the person can set your email under Options->Security, and give you a new password (also under Options->Security). Then you can contact us and request *we* cancel the paypal subscription, which won't be an issue because we will recognize you as the account owner. And then you can sign up again with your new information once the current subscription expires.

The original owner could also use the Contact Us form to request the subscription be cancelled, or even cancel it themselves before turning over ownership.

But in any case, no member or user will ever need to (or in fact be able to) access the payment information of any other member. The process above is straightforward, and does not compromise private payment information.

Hello Marc, Thanks, I appreciate very much your detailed explanation of the various options.

I don't think the magazine subscription analogy is very relevant, though. In changing the payment method, we would not be trying to carry on the delivery of a future sequence of products (like magazine issues), something that could be done easily by a new subscription by anyone at any time; instead we would be trying to ensure the intact preservation of an existing and valuable entity (one that is online), so that when the current paid period expires, it doesn't disappear or become inaccessible and stagnant.

You mention the possibility of having a "delegated admin". That seems to me the simplest and most promising approach. If I drop dead, a previously "delegated admin" could carry on the calendar simply by logging in and a providing new payment source. But I can't find anywhere how to set up such a "delegated admin". Can you point me to that process, please?

Regards,

David

Hi Marc, Still wondering about how to set up what you referred to as a 'delegated admin'; please let me know, thanks.
