Hi,

(This is my first post here. I want to thank you for an excellent service.)

I went to my Calendar of Events page at:

http://cherokeecountync.com/news/modules.php?name=Calendar_of_Events

and the page hangs up while "Transferring data from www.yceml.net..." until it times out. The calendar is not displaying.

I tried logging into the calendar through localendar.com/elsie and I can't see it there, either.

I've checked my calendar of events page with IE 5, Netscape 7, and iCab on a Mac using OS 9.1.

This is the first time I've ever had a problem accessing the calendar -- quite a good record! While my account with cherokeecountync is new, I've had one with johndilbeck for quite some time.

I hope this is a problem that can be resolved fairly quickly. I'm publicizing this calendar page quite widely. In fact, I plan on upgrading to a premium service on Monday so I can continue to funnel multiple calendars into this one.

Thanks,

JD

Whew! I had to admit, you had me stumped here.. I could not for the life of me figure out why *that* calendar (of "billions served" biggrin ) was having a problem...

Turns out - it's the weather confused

The specific National Weather Service resource we hit for the zone corresponding to your (cherokeecountync) calendar's zipcode seems totally hosed today. It doesn't just send back *bad* data and then stop, it keeps sending bad data forever and ever and ever...

Normally, we have checks in place to quit waiting if the NWS *never* responds... but we've never had the case before where it just keeps spewing garbage endlessly. That's why your calendar wasn't being displayed.

For now, I've turned off the options on your calendar to display weather info. We'll have to add some code on our side to guard against this happening in the future (for any/everyone!).

Hi,

I know that had to be a real bear to solve. Thanks!

Now, I can see the calendar when I log in to localendar.com, and it shows up on:
http://cherokeecountync.com/news/modules.php?name=Calendar_of_Events

However, it still hangs up until I click the stop button. Apparently that's because of the 90 minute search I'm doing.

I'm going to turn that part off tonight to get the main calendar to show up.

Your post reminded me that for several days last week, my weather seemed to be coming from Franklin, NC rather than the airport in Andrews, NC. I wonder if they have a problem with their data sending or recording somewhere up the line.

I don't know if you want to do anything to the feed for the 90 minute search.

Will this affect my account, again, if I upgrade to the basic level of premium service so I can merge multiple calendars?

Thanks for a great service!

All the best,

JD

Since the local searches include weather data, you're going to see the same problem you saw on your calendar because of the NWS problem.

We're working on some changes to get around this problem when the NWS machines start acting extra-goofy

OK - the fix is out there. I checked, and the NWS is still having problems for zip 28906. I did a 90-minute search, and it came back no prob.

You can also re-enable weather on your calendar at this point (though until the NWS fixes their server, you won't see an updated forecast)

Thanks!

I've re-enabled the weather text and graphics and the calendars are showing up with no problems, even though the weather data, as you said, is not showing up.

I appreciate all the work you've done on this.

Do you know who I could contact at the NWS about their problem with the server for 28906? Or, do you know an appropriate URL I could start with?

All the best,

JD

There is a "front-door" way to duplicate the problem:

Here's a sample NWS page that is working:
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/data/forecasts/NJZ001.php?warncounty=NJC037&city=Sussex

If you search for your zipcode on that page, you'll see the underlying issue manifest itself as an endless stream of garbage.

I believe if you send email to SR-SRH.Webmaster
@noaa.gov, they might be able to track this down. Unfortunately, we don't have the resources here to follow up w/ every NWS related problem, but we appreciate your help.

biggrin

I contacted NWS using the info you provided. They've fixed the problem on their end and weather is showing on my calendar, again.

Everything's working great.

I really appreciate your help in getting this resolved.

All the best,

JD
